Wuyuan County (Ziyang Town)

Ziyang Town in Wuyuan County is located in the county seat of Wuyuan, Jiangxi Province. It is a millennia-old town, dating back to the sixth year of the Xiantong era of the Tang Dynasty (865 AD). Initially called Xian’gao, it was also known as Ran City, and later renamed Ziyang (after the alias of the revered sage Zhu Xi).

Ziyang Town is the site of Wuyuan County’s county seat and the first stop for every visitor to Wuyuan. Most of the architecture here is in the Huizhou style. The urban area is not large but is relatively tidy.

Wuyuan’s attractions are numerous and scattered across the east, west, and north of Ziyang Town, the county center. As a result, it is common to divide Wuyuan’s tourism into three routes: east, north, and west. Each route has its own characteristics. The east route is a classic traditional tourist line, concentrated with ancient architecture; the north route combines ancient villages with natural beauty; the west route is the latest to be developed and the least visited, making it a good option for those who prefer tranquility.

The most popular routes are the east and north routes, with both centered around Wuyuan County.

Wuyuan County is quite small—you can drive around it in about an hour. When visiting, besides taking the bus, you can also rent a bicycle.

There are many ways to get to Wuyuan County. Most people come here as a transit point or hub from which to visit other major scenic spots in Wuyuan, including Jiangwan, Jiangling, Huangling, and Likeng. If you stay here, the distance to the scenic areas is still somewhat far—unless you’re driving, waiting for local buses can be quite frustrating, as they often have long waits and are not cheap. However, overall, Wuyuan County is quite nice, resembling a small prefecture-level city in many aspects.

For Wuyuan tourism, you can purchase a 14-attraction pass or buy individual tickets for each attraction. The all-inclusive attraction pass costs 210 yuan.

If you opt to buy single-entry tickets for these attractions, most sites (except Jiangwan) cost 60 yuan each, while the Jiangwan site costs 120 yuan. If you plan to visit multiple attractions, the all-inclusive pass offers much better value, though the choice ultimately depends on your specific itinerary.

Tips

The all-inclusive attraction pass does not cover all of Wuyuan’s attractions. Sites such as Qingyuan Village, Likeng, and Hongcun are not included in the pass. Even if you have purchased the pass, you will need to buy separate tickets for these attractions.
