Eighteen-Mile Peach Creek

The scenic area is located in the western part of Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province. It consists of three natural villages: Zhifeng, Kongcun, and Kengtou, approximately 28 kilometers from the county town, about a 40-minute drive. Zhifeng is a millennia-old village in Huizhou. Beside the village flows a clear little river that is even older than the village itself. The vernacular architecture and layout of Zhifeng are so beautifully vibrant that sometimes elaborate words are unnecessary—simple language is the best way to describe it. With mountains and water, it showcases the local charm of landscape beauty. Upon closer reflection, there are even more ancient legends behind the place names.

Kongcun is both a land of scholars and a typical Huizhou-style village with houses featuring white walls and black tiles nestled against mountains and beside water. From a distance, it looks like a painting filled with tranquility. It is the true embodiment of the phrase “a bend of clear water runs through the village, with peach petals drifting along the stream.” By the village stream stands a towering thousand-year-old nanmu tree, a first-class nationally protected species. Ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties can also be seen everywhere.

Kengtou is an ancient village established over 1,400 years ago, historically known as “Peach Creek,” named after Pan Yue of the Jin Dynasty who led villagers to plant peach trees along the creek. The village is surrounded by mountains on two sides, with two streams converging and flowing through it. Kengtou Village boasts “two abundances” and “two uniquenesses.” One of the “abundances” is the long history of scholars and officials. A local saying goes, “Jinshi (successful imperial exam candidates) are everywhere on the streets, and xiucai (scholarship holders) are as common as dogs.” The village genealogy records that between the Zhengde and Wanli eras of the Ming Dynasty alone, eleven villagers passed the imperial examination for jinshi, and six served as ministers. Among them, the Pan Huang family produced nine jinshi across three generations, and Pan Huang himself successively held the position of Minister in the Ministries of Personnel, Justice, Works, and War—a remarkable achievement in Wuyuan’s glorious history. One of the “uniquenesses” is the “old water wine” brewed from a spring said to have been dug by Lü Dongbin, which historical records say was beloved by Yan Song, the Ming Dynasty prime minister. The other uniqueness is the “cold-water pond fish” raised in household ponds fed by fresh creek water—delicious, tender, and even medicinal. Additionally, Kengtou Village features a thousand-year-old peony, the “Prime Minister’s Study Retreat,” and the “Eight Scenic Spots of Peach Creek.”
