Wangkou Pingdu Weir

Wangkou Pingdu Weir is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province.

Wangkou Pingdu Weir is located in Wuyuan County and dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

The weir is situated in the river at the water outlet of Wangkou Village and was built during the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty.

The weir is 120 meters long from north to south and 15 meters wide. Its southern end is built close to the bank, while the northern end bends at a right angle upwards, leaving a 6-meter-wide channel for boats to pass. Without using any gates, it simultaneously solved the conflicting needs of water storage, boat passage, and water flow regulation. It is a masterpiece in the history of China’s hydraulic engineering. At its peak, Wangkou Village had 18 river docks in operation, and after more than 200 years of flooding, not a single stone of the weir has been damaged.

The weir was designed by Jiang Yong, a Qing Dynasty scholar of Confucian classics and phonology.

Wangkou Pingdu Weir was designated as a Jiangxi Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
