Jiang Yong (1681–1762)

A phonologist of the Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Shenxiu, and he was a native of Jiangwan, Wuyuan, Anhui. At the age of 21, he became a county-level student. At 34, he was appointed as a government-supported scholar. At 62, he became a tribute student. He was dedicated to learning and had profound knowledge of both ancient and modern studies, with a focus on the Thirteen Classics and their Commentaries. He excelled in mathematics, musical temperament, and phonology, and had particularly deep expertise in the Three Rites as well as astronomy and geography. Once, when he went to the capital with friends, the Imperial College was holding a special session on the Three Rites. The chief editor Fang Bao, who prided himself on his classical scholarship, challenged him with several questions about the Rites of Capping and Wedding.
