The Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument is a cultural tourism attraction, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

Pingxiang is the birthplace of the Autumn Harvest Uprising. In early 1927, Mao Zedong presided over a military meeting for the uprising in Anyuan and personally initiated and led the momentous Autumn Harvest Uprising on September 9, which shook the nation and marked the first time the flag of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army was raised. To commemorate this significant event in China’s revolutionary history, on June 21, 1998, the General Office of the CPC Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council approved the establishment of the Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument in Pingxiang City. The monument was completed on August 27, 2000. The Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument stands on the central axis of the main plaza in Autumn Harvest Uprising Square, adjacent to the city’s main thoroughfare, Jianshe Road. Autumn Harvest Uprising Square is a commemorative plaza built to honor the uprising. Located in the northern new district of Pingxiang, it covers an area of over 300 acres. Centered around the newly built Zhaoping Bridge and linked by the Ping River, the square consists of four sections. With the Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument as its focal point, the square features a colorful musical fountain along the central southern axis and the grand Autumn Harvest Uprising Memorial Hall. Landscaped features create multiple spaces for activities and leisure, giving the square a multifunctional role as a venue for entertainment, exhibitions, shopping, and more. It has become a key activity hub in downtown Pingxiang and an important symbol of the city's landscape. The Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument stands 30.9 meters tall and covers an area of 151 square meters. It stands majestically with an imposing presence. The base of the monument houses electronic control equipment, with movable colored spotlights installed at the four corners of the mock Great Wall tower and at the top of the monument. The surrounding base area is landscaped, and the broad platforms around the base form a unique and distinctive landscape. The monument incorporates a harmonious and organic arrangement of motifs including the numeral “9,” bas-reliefs, inscriptions, the Great Wall, the emblem of the Anyuan Miners’ and Railway Workers’ Club, pillars, flames (torches), five-pointed stars, an inscription plaque, red flags, mountain ranges, and ears of rice. The Great Wall tower connects to the pillar at 27 meters, with 27 steps leading up to the 3.9-meter-high base. The front and back of the top of the pillar are shaped as two “9”s, symbolizing the date of the uprising—September 9, 1927—and also suggesting the concept of “the ninth heaven.” The torches on the Great Wall and the flames on the sides of the base represent how the fire of the Autumn Harvest Uprising spread across the land, from the Great Wall to the rivers and beyond, echoing Mao Zedong’s famous words engraved on the south and north sides of the base: “A single spark can start a prairie fire.” The front of the monument’s base bears the inscription, while the other three sides feature three meticulously carved granite bas-reliefs arranged clockwise: “The Red Lantern in Zhangjiawan,” “Thunderous Start,” and “Marching to Jinggangshan.” These depict the sweeping historical scenes of the Autumn Harvest Uprising. The front and back of the pillar are inscribed with the monument’s name, written by General Secretary Jiang Zemin: “Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument,” and the full text of Mao Zedong’s poem “Xi Jiang Yue · Autumn Harvest Uprising.” The body of the monument features bas-relief carvings of billowing battle flags and towering mountains, symbolizing that the Autumn Harvest Uprising was the first armed struggle led by the Chinese Communist Party and a united front of workers, peasants, and soldiers. It was the first time the flag of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army was raised, and it marked the journey to Jinggangshan to establish a revolutionary base. The Autumn Harvest Uprising Monument has been designated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee as one of the second group of National Patriotic Education Demonstration Bases. It serves not only as an important site for revolutionary tradition education for the public but also as a landmark building of Pingxiang City.
