Geladandong Peak stands at an elevation of6621meters and is the main peak of the Tanggula Mountains. Its Tibetan name means "high, sharp, and towering mountain peak," located at longitude 9ldegrees and latitude33.5degrees. The Jianggudiru Glacier on its southern side is the true source of the Yangtze River, where melting ice forms streams that converge with other tributaries to become the Tuotuo River.1994In [year]8, the Peking University Mountain Eagle Society Mountaineering Team successfully summited Geladandong Peak.11team members became the first descendants of the Chinese nation to reach the snow-capped peak at the source of the Yangtze River. On the20th anniversary of the first domestic ascent of Geladandong Peak, the Peking University Mountain Eagle Society2014mountaineering team, consisting of19members, will follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and revisit this cradle of Chinese civilization.
Shared Origins & Convergence
While the mountaineering team conducts climbing and scientific research in the Yangtze River source area, the Peking University Mountain Eagle Society Scientific Expedition Team, also traveling to Qinghai Province, will carry out short-term anthropological studies, flora and fauna observations, and treks in the Yellow River source area of Guoluo. The two teams will continue the tradition of the Mountain Eagle Society’s mountaineering and scientific expedition teams converging. Toward the end of the climbing and scientific research period, the scientific expedition team will travel to the mountaineering team’s base camp to achieve the meeting of the “Yangtze River Source” and “Yellow River Source” teams.
Environmental Protection & Scientific Research
Given that Geladandong is located at the source of the Yangtze River, the Peking University2014mountaineering team also prioritizes environmental and ecological issues. In addition to continuing the tradition of maintaining “zero waste” during climbing activities, adjustments have been made to the logistics plan to strictly control waste generation and disposal throughout the climb. The use of any chemical or biological agents is particularly prohibited, enforcing a “zero tolerance” policy toward pollution. On the other hand, the Yangtze River source area exhibits significant academic research value and importance due to geomorphological and environmental changes caused by global climate change. The Peking University mountaineering team will also conduct surveys on the landforms and ecological conditions of the Yangtze River source area during this climb. During the Geladandong Peak climbing proposal meeting, the team presented and discussed the feasibility, specific plans, and expert recommendations regarding environmental protection and scientific research with leaders from the Mountaineering Association and university faculty.
