In October, the 2014 Zhangjiajie Environmental Protection Century Campaign, organized by the Zhangjiajie Municipal Environmental Protection Century Campaign Committee, was officially launched. Themed "Strengthening Special Rectification Measures to Create a Sky Blue, Land Green, Water Clear Environment," the campaign will focus on six key areas for concentrated rectification: air pollution prevention and control, water pollution prevention and control, waste management, livestock and poultry farming pollution rectification, noise pollution rectification, and community-based green initiatives.
For Zhangjiajie, a major tourist destination, the significance of waste management goes without saying. The waste management practices in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, located in Wulingyuan District, have been particularly noteworthy in recent years.
In recent years, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has made significant efforts in managing scenic area waste. The increase in the number of sanitation workers and trash bins has had a positive impact. Additionally, the construction of the Zhangjiajie Bailong Elevator has greatly reduced the time visitors spend ascending and descending the mountain, thereby decreasing the number of tourists lingering in the scenic area. This helps balance the park’s reception capacity and reduce littering.
The Bailong Elevator is a must-pass route to Zhangjiajie’s core scenic area, Yuanjiajie, connecting two premier tourist routes: "Golden Whip Stream" and "Yuanjiajie." With a huge volume of foot traffic, this unique "visit the mountain, stay at the foot of the mountain" model has played an irreplaceable role in easing scenic area reception pressure and reducing environmental pollution. Since its operation in 2004, the Bailong Elevator has transported over 4 million visitors.
