There are two former residences in Anyuan where Mao Zedong stayed. Both sites are key cultural relics protection units of Pingxiang City and are red tourism attractions in the region. The site where Mao Zedong stayed during his autumn 1921 visit to Anyuan is located at No. 44, Bafangjing, Anyuan. It is an ordinary bungalow that was originally a private residence. In October 1921, Mao Zedong stayed here during his trip to Anyuan. The site where Mao Zedong and Li Lisan stayed during their winter 1921 visit to Anyuan was originally a restaurant on Old Back Street. In mid-December 1921, Mao Zedong, Li Lisan, and others stayed here during their trip to Anyuan. In late October 1921, Mao Zedong, then Secretary of the Hunan Provincial Branch of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Hunan Division of the All-China Labor Syndicate Secretariat, came to Anyuan to conduct an on-site investigation. He stayed at the home of Mao Ziyun, a fellow townsman who worked as a section chief at the mine and lived near Bafangjing. Mao’s investigation lasted about a week, during which he toured the mining area, descended into the mine shafts, and visited workers’ dormitories and dining areas. This investigation not only helped the workers become acquainted with Mao Zedong and introduced them to revolutionary ideas of liberation, but also led Mao to recognize Anyuan as a place where a workers’ movement could quickly take root. Subsequently, he worked with Huang Ai, leader of the Hunan Labor Federation, and Zhang Liquan, a labor commentator, to establish communication with Anyuan’s workers under the name of the All-China Labor Syndicate Secretariat through personal connections. In December 1921, Mao Zedong, accompanied by Li Lisan (sent by the CPC Central Committee to work in Hunan), Song Yousheng (a teacher at the affiliated primary school of Hunan First Normal University and a member of the Youth League), and guided by Zhang Liquan, traveled to Anyuan. There, they investigated local conditions, promoted revolutionary ideology, and began organizing and uniting workers. Later, Mao Zedong returned to Anyuan six more times to carry out revolutionary activities.
