Former Site of the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Club

The Former Site of the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Club is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism attraction.

The Former Site of the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Club is located at No. 52, Niujiaopo, Anyuan, Pingxiang City, Jiangxi Province. Originally the meeting place of the Hubei Native-Place Association, on May 1, 1922, the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Club was established here by renting the site, and the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Strike Command Headquarters was also situated here.

In 1922, the Xiang District Committee led by Mao Zedong sent Li Lisan and Jiang Xianyun to carry out labor movement work in the Anyuan area. In March of the same year, the Preparatory Committee of the Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Club was formed. On May 1, the Club was officially established, with Li Lisan and others serving as successive directors. Party and youth league organizations as well as workers' patrol squads were also set up. Due to the long-term wage arrears and union suppression by the railway and mine authorities, on September 14, the Club led over 17,000 railway and mine workers in a major strike (the famous Anyuan Railway and Mine Workers’ Strike), which ended in victory, forcing the authorities to accept all the workers’ negotiated demands. In 1923, Anyuan miners pooled funds to build a new club, and the Club’s various bodies were moved to the new location.

The new club was built in the style of the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, consisting of a two-story building. The central hall on the first floor housed the Patrol Corps office, the right side was the office of the Adjudication Committee, and the left side was the accounting office. On the second floor, the left side was the General Representatives’ Meeting Room, the front room on the left was the bedroom of [name omitted] and He Baozhen, and the large room on the right side of the second floor was the Directors’ Office. Li Lisan (1899–1967) – Member of the Standing Committee and Secretary-General of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Propaganda, Vice-Chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

A native of Liling County (now Liling City), Hunan Province, originally named Li Longzhi, born on November 18, 1899, into a fallen landlord family in Yangsanshi, Liling County.
