Pingxiang Museum

Pingxiang Museum was established in 1979, originally located within the Confucian Temple of Pingxiang.

The new museum was completed and opened to the public in October 2010. It is located at No. 376 Binhe East Road, Pingxiang City, neighboring the Autumn Harvest Uprising Square and Rainbow Bridge to the north, facing Golden Snail Peak and Tiger-shaped Mountain, bordering the Ping River to the west, and connecting to Ehu Park below. The main building has six floors and stands 28 meters tall, covering an area of approximately 26,000 square meters with a construction area of about 16,900 square meters. The museum includes exhibition areas, folk culture zones, a historical lecture hall, administrative offices, and visitor service areas.

Pingxiang Museum is a specialized institution dedicated to the protection, research, and display of historical and cultural heritage as well as material evidence of the human environment. It is a comprehensive modern museum integrating collection, archaeology, research, and exhibitions, serving as an important platform for patriotic education, historical and cultural promotion, and science outreach.

In 2018, Pingxiang Museum was designated as a National Second-Class Museum by the National Cultural Heritage Administration.

Pingxiang Museum currently houses a collection of 4,501 cultural relics (sets) (actual count: 13,755 items), including: 21 first-class relics (sets) (actual count: 26 items); 74 second-class relics (sets) (actual count: 80 items); and 917 third-class relics (sets) (actual count: 1,360 items).

In addition, the museum possesses 517 various types of cultural relic specimens and 363 natural heritage specimens, including 248 dinosaur egg fossils from the Late Cretaceous period and one extremely rare natural specimen—the “world’s rarest and Asia’s largest” giant lingzhi mushroom—of significant archaeological value. These collections reflect, from various perspectives, the developmental trajectory, cultural features, and local natural heritage of Pingxiang across different historical periods.

Between 2002 and 2014, 248 dinosaur eggs were discovered in the Cretaceous red strata of the Pingxiang area. In 2008, dinosaur skeleton fossils were found in the same geological layer of the region, an extremely rare occurrence nationwide. This has established Pingxiang as one of the most important sources of dinosaur egg fossils in South China.

Address: No. 376, Binhe East Road, Anyuan District, Pingxiang City, Jiangxi Province
