Former Residence of Lu Qi

The former residence of Lu Qi is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Lu Qi is located in Lucuo Natural Village, Chengping Village, Fengwei Town. It was built by Lu Qi after he passed the imperial examination to honor his ancestors and bring glory to his family. The residence sits with its back against Guifeng Pagoda, facing the Greater and Lesser Ruyi Mountains (also known as Guanyin Mountain), borders Dagui Bay to the south, and looks out onto the Five-Li Beach to the north. It was originally constructed during the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1341–1368 AD) and has stood for over six hundred years. It faces southwest, measures 60 meters in length and 38 meters in width, features three courtyards and seven bays, two central courtyards, and a flush-gable roof, making it a grand structure rich in local architectural character.

The residence is surrounded by walls, with a spacious front courtyard and two woodsheds (kitchen and storage rooms) on each side. To the north stands a two-story embroidery tower (the living quarters of the Lu daughters), while to the south are separate literary and martial arts halls (study rooms). Behind the halls lies a small garden with a pavilion, stone tables, stone benches, rockeries, and more, offering an elegant and picturesque setting. In spring and summer, the area is shaded by lush trees, blooming flowers, and filled with the songs of birds and fluttering butterflies—an ideal spot for leisure and reading.

A stone-paved path leads from the front gate of the walls straight to Dagui Beach and extends for about three li. According to ancient legend, this stone path was once an official road connecting Dagui Village to an ancient city to the east—Dongjing City. This city served as an administrative and military hub, bustling with markets and residents. However, it later sank into the sea due to an earthquake and tectonic shifts...

To the north of the residence stands a stele pavilion built by Lu Qi’s ancestors. It is enclosed by railings and houses a stone stele inscribed with a regulated verse in regular script: “Dark clouds at the sky’s edge hold heavy rain; / Before the tower, red sun brightens the mountain. / Where now is Songyang’s recluse, so fine? / His azure gaze still warms souls far and wide.” This poem was personally composed and inscribed by Cai Xiang, a renowned statesman, master calligrapher, and poet of the Song Dynasty, when he visited the Lu family in Guifengchengping to pay respects to his maternal grandmother. The poem and calligraphy are both exceptional, carrying deep meaning and evoking great admiration. (It is recorded in the Song Poetry Appreciation Dictionary published by Shanghai Lexicographical Publishing House.) During the Cultural Revolution, the stele was moved and used as a wall stone in a toilet, nearly being destroyed. Fortunately, it was rescued and preserved in time and remains intact to this day. To the south of the pavilion once stood an ancient well (now filled in as foundation for the residence), whose water was clear, sweet, and never ran dry, providing drinking water for the whole village.

Lu Qi (1306–1362), courtesy name Xihan, also known as Guifeng or Lizhai, was born in 1306 in Daying Village, Fengwei Town, Quangang District. As a youth, he dedicated himself to studying, meticulously exploring the classics, literature, and poetry. In 1341, during the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty, Lu Qi accompanied his teacher Yu Zixian to take the provincial examination in Zhejiang. However, his teacher fell ill and died en route. “Qi, ignoring the examination schedule, arranged the funeral and accompanied his friend Chen Yanbo to escort the body back home.

After securing an official post, he treated Yu Zixian’s family as if the teacher were still alive,” demonstrating deep gratitude and loyalty. In 1342, during the examinations, Lu Qi excelled in poetry and the classics, ranking among the top candidates and passing the imperial examination under the list of Chen Zuren. Initially...
