Tamsui isn’t just about beautiful sunsets—catching folk music and fireworks at Fisherman’s Wharf is all the rage too!

Come to Tamsui—not just to watch the sunset, eat oyster omelets (ah-gei), or sip Grandma’s plum juice. Fisherman’s Wharf is also super popular. Located at the mouth of the Tamsui River, Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf is famed both domestically and internationally for the “Tamsui Sunset.” From here, you can take in the full panoramic view of the river estuary’s landscapes. After years of development, the wharf has become a major tourist attraction in northern Taiwan and has been honored as one of the nation’s top ten charming fishing harbors.

In addition to maintaining traditional fishing functions, the harbor area also features various infrastructure and tourism amenities such as floating docks, Lover’s Bridge, and wooden boardwalks. It attracts crowds of visitors year-round and has become a popular spot for advertising shoots and event hosting. Recently, added art installations have enhanced the charm of the harbor, drawing even more tourists.

The New Taipei City Fisheries and Fishing Port Affairs Management Office noted that the beauty of Tamsui’s dusk has been celebrated in song for nearly a century. Golden sunlight spills across the Tamsui River, accompanied by the sea breeze, creating a breathtaking sunset scene. Especially, Lover’s Bridge is one of the best spots to watch the sun dip below the horizon, offering a moment where one can forget the noise and worries of daily life.

To invigorate local businesses and boost regional economic prosperity, the New Taipei City Government and related organizations have held a variety of events at Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf in recent years. These include the “Tamsui Fisherman’s Stage,” “New Taipei City Beer Festival,” “International Tour de Taiwan Cycle Race,” “Fisherman’s Wharf – Magical Qixi Night,” and “Hip-Hop Theme Park.” A range of family-friendly activities have been offered, further enhancing the harbor’s tourism appeal. In terms of diversified use and development of fishing ports, it has become a model for all 224 fishing harbors nationwide.

The Fisheries Department stated that, in addition to organizing diverse events to attract tourists, the harbor area has recently installed several art pieces such as the Easter Bunny, the Tree of Romantic Happiness and Bell, Lover’s Frame, and “I’m at Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf.” These installations have successfully generated buzz, attracting both adults and children to take photos and create memorable family moments.

Moreover, to encourage the use of public transportation, a YouBike station was set up in the harbor area in 2017, allowing visitors to cycle from Tamsui MRT Station to Fisherman’s Wharf for an in-depth exploration. Travelers can discover the local fishing village, learn about Tamsui’s historic sites, and help stimulate the local economy.

The Fisheries Department further explained that although the number of large tour group visitors arriving by bus has slightly decreased, the number of independent travelers from abroad or locals arriving by public transport, bicycle, or rented vehicles has been steadily increasing. To maintain the strong flow of tourists to Fisherman’s Wharf,

future plans will align with the completion of the Tamsui Light Rail, continuing to innovate with harbor events to attract more visitors. The construction of the third berthing area yacht marina will also create new highlights, encouraging more private investment in development. This will help energize the fishing port and further elevate the quality of tourism at Fisherman’s Wharf.
