The Essence of Indigenous Folk Songs Debuts at Taichung Harbor Arts Center on Sunday

Taichung’s Harbor Arts Center will hold a free indigenous performance event, “Through Nature – Indigenous, Sound, and Dance,” this Sunday (March 4) from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., inviting Tgbin Indigenous Dance Troupe to perform traditional indigenous dances and songs. The program incorporates cultural symbols such as hunting, weaving, and rattan crafting of the indigenous people. The audience can appreciate the essence of traditional cultures of ethnic groups including the Amis, Tsou, and Atayal through the performance.

The performance includes songs such as “Fishing Song,” “Standing on the Highland,” “Love of the Ocean,” and “Taoshan Dance,” integrating dances from nine different ethnic cultures. Among them, “Fishing Song” is a traditional Amis folk song featuring a highly varied dance; “Mouth Harp Love Song” depicts how conservative Atayal people in the past expressed affection for one another through the mouth harp, usually played by males for females, often accompanied by spontaneous dancing to convey admiration; “Standing on the Highland” is an interactive dance designed to engage the audience and allow participants to experience indigenous traditional culture; “Love of the Ocean” blends traditional dances of the Tsou and Atayal peoples, showcasing both strength and graceful elegance; “Taoshan Dance” is a composed medley adapted from songs of the Paiwan and Amis peoples, interpreting the distinct cultures of the two ethnic groups.

The name Tgbin of Tgbin Indigenous Dance Troupe is the Japanese transliteration of the Atayal word for “beech tree.” Established on October 1, 2010, the troupe is composed of tribal youths aged 15 to 35 who are passionate about dancing. The group is dedicated to inheriting and promoting the song and dance culture of the Atayal people.
