Era: Ming and Qing Dynasties

Location: Fuquan Village and Liujian Village, Jinjing Town, Jinjiang City

Introduction: Fuquan Suocheng was built in the 20th year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1387) by Jiangxia Marquis Zhou Dexing to defend against Japanese pirates. It was renovated in the 16th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1677). The remaining rammed earth city wall ruins are about 2,000 meters long and 5 meters wide, with a north-south water gate each. Inside the city stands the Tailless Tower, a three-story, four-cornered solid stone tower with a remaining height of 8.6 meters and a base side length of 3.4 meters. There are nine Ming Dynasty cliff inscriptions; the Temple of Liu Congxiao, initially built in the Song Dynasty and renovated in the Republic of China period, enshrines the deity Guangze Zunwang. The temple houses Song Dynasty lotus-petal-base pillars, stone gate piers, square-headed stone railing pillars, and boundary stone steles.

Protected Area: Fuquan City Wall Ruins: 10 meters on each side of the Fuquan City wall ruins;

Tailless Tower: 50 meters around the tower;

Fuquan City Stone Carvings: 50 meters around the cliff carvings; horse troughs and inscribed steles within the city are also under protection;

Temple of Liu Congxiao: 10 meters extending outward from all sides.

Fuquan Village: Fuquan Village is located by the sea in Jinjing Town, southeastern Jinjiang, Fujian Province. It is 80 li north of Quanzhou, faces the Taiwan Strait to the east, connects to Shenhu to the north, and links to Weitou to the south.

The people of Fuquan place great emphasis on culture and the education of their children. As early as the initial construction of the city, the ancestors established the Zhu Zi Ancestral Hall and set up private schools, creating a unique approach to cultural education. During the culturally enlightened Ming Dynasty, many talents emerged from Fuquan in imperial examinations, giving rise to the saying “no surname without scholars.” It is recorded that during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as many as 20 individuals from Fuquan Village passed imperial examinations and became jinshi (advanced scholars).
