Weitou Village

Weitou Village is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Weitou Village is one of the eight scenic areas planned in Quanzhou City, facing Kinmen Island across the sea. According to the "Jinjiang County Annals" compiled by Zhou Xuezeng and others during the Qing Dynasty, Weitou was described as follows: "Overlooking the vast sea, it is a vital passageway for ships traveling between the northern and southern waters." With broad and deep waters, Weitou Bay is a natural sheltered harbor. As early as the Southern Song Dynasty, when Quanzhou began developing its foreign economic and trade activities, it placed great importance on Weitou Bay, earning it the reputation as the "Pearl of the East China Sea." In the 1980s, Weitou Port became one of the first pilot ports for small-scale trade with Taiwan, making it the earliest port to facilitate people-to-people exchanges across the Straits.

Historic Village

Weitou Village is a small fishing village with a history of over 1,200 years. As early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, it was renowned as "a must-stop place for ships traveling between the northern and southern waters." During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the ancient Weitou Port was one of the four major harbors of Quanzhou along the Maritime Silk Road. Zhao Defu, prefect of Quanzhou during the Southern Song Dynasty, once inspected Weitou and established Bao'gai Fort to defend against pirates. During the Ming Hongwu era, the Weitou Command Fortress built by Marquis Zhou Dexing still has visible ruins. In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, national hero Zheng Chenggong stationed his troops here during the recovery of Taiwan, and General Shi Lang also trained naval forces here, obtaining the Ma Zu flag from Weitou to pacify Penghu and Taiwan. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, more than 200 marshals and provincial/ministerial-level officials, including Zhu De and Chen Yi, have left their footprints here.

Especially during the world-shocking "August 23 Artillery Battle" in 1958, it gained fame both domestically and internationally, often referred to as the "Heroic Weitou" and the "Beautiful Weitou." From being the frontline of coastal defense in the past to now being at the forefront of cross-Straits exchanges, it has become a microcosm of the shifting dynamics in cross-Straits relations over the 60-plus years since the founding of New China. With its long history and culture, numerous heroic figures, unique bonds across the Straits, and abundant tourism resources, Weitou forms a thousand-year-old living scroll.

Beautiful Beaches

Weitou Village is surrounded by the sea on three sides, with white sandy beaches on both the eastern and western sides. The eastern beach is over 100 meters wide, with sand that contains very little mud, has moderate grain size, and includes trace amounts of gold sand and magnetic sand, making it ideal for industrial casting and as raw material for glass (silicate) production. The calm waters of Moon Bay and Golden Sand Bay serve as excellent spots for fishing and leisure by the sea.

Natural Harbor Weitou Port has been an external trading harbor since ancient times, featuring a ten-thousand-ton dock and serving as one of the main ports in Jinjiang. It is a key port for overseas Chinese from southern Jinjiang to enter and exit, as well as an important hub for cargo distribution. Weitou enjoys convenient land and water transportation, connected to the Fuzhou-Xiamen Expressway, National Highway 306, and the Coastal Expressway, forming a high-quality transportation network.

Currently, the development and planning of Weitou Bay will be carried out in two parts: land and water. With the under-construction Taiwanese compatriots’ reception center (covering 20 acres) as the core, it aims to establish a comprehensive resort and entertainment venue equipped with leisure, vacation, sports, fitness, and amusement facilities — a multifunctional, high-end, modern complex. Development will include marine tours, sailing, rowing, jet skiing, and other water sports.

In addition to the blue sea, clear skies, golden sands, and green trees, another attraction for visitors from all over is the rich variety of seafood: grouper, lobster, black porgy, yellow croaker, red snapper, and more. Some even arrive early to watch the sunrise or gather in the evening to see flocks of birds flying past at sunset.
