Former Site of the Jiangkou Gun-Seizure Battle
The Former Site of the Jiangkou Gun-Seizure Battle is a classic destination on China’s red tourism trail.
The Former Site of the Jiangkou Gun-Seizure Battle is located in Xindun Natural Village, Xindun Village, Jiangkou Town, Hanjiang District, Putian City.
In 1930, Putian was suffering under the chaos of warlord infighting, rampant banditry, and the heavy taxation and extortion imposed by the Nationalist government, placing the population in extreme hardship. Public consciousness of resisting warlord oppression was running high. In February 1930, the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party held its Second Congress in Xiamen. The congress passed a resolution calling on party organizations in Quanzhou and Putian to bravely lead mass struggles and organize uprisings. The Putian County Committee of the CCP decided to launch a local uprising in response to the provincial call, and the gun-seizure operation in Xindun, Jiangkou, was one of the more significant armed struggles. On March 24, 1930, Chen Tianzhang, Zhang Ruiqi, and others led guerrilla forces to rally over 300 locals around Jiangkou. They attacked the garrison of the Nationalist salt soldiers stationed in nearby Xindun Village, seizing 24 guns in one fell swoop. The seized items from the salt soldiers were distributed among the people, while notices, slogans, and leaflets were posted and handed out in the area. Afterward, the group moved to Jiangkou Street where they destroyed the grain office and the consumption tax bureau. Following the action, the team safely retreated to Fengjishan Village in Fuqing, adjacent to Jiangkou, to lie low. The guerrillas’ successful attack on the Nationalist salt soldiers greatly boosted the courage of resistance among local populations, expanded the political influence of the Communist Party, and propelled revolutionary progress in central Fujian.
The Former Site of the Jiangkou Gun-Seizure Battle was originally an old temple, which has since been destroyed. The currently reconstructed Li Clan Ancestral Hall on the original site is a single-story brick-and-wood structure with independent rooms inside and no side chambers. The building covers a construction area of 180 square meters.
