Former Site of the Hanjiang Liaison Station
The former site of the Hanjiang Liaison Station is a classic red tourism attraction.
The former site of the Hanjiang Liaison Station is located at No. 23, Luomutian, Hanxi Subdistrict, Hanjiang District, Putian City.
Chen Changcheng, a local historian and cultural expert from Putian, was the eldest grandson of Chen Jieren, former president of the Hanjiang Chamber of Commerce. During the Anti-Japanese War, he actively participated in underground revolutionary activities under the leadership of the CPC Central Fujian Special Committee. In the autumn of 1948, as the revolutionary situation developed, urban work became increasingly important. The Central Fujian Committee decided to establish the Hanjiang Underground Liaison Station at Chen Changcheng’s home, with Chen himself serving as the person in charge. Other members included Zheng Zhaoshu and Yang Jun, along with several progressive youths who collaborated in the efforts. After its establishment, the Hanjiang Liaison Station contributed significantly to the liberation of Central Fujian and Putian. Its key functions were as follows: First, it provided shelter and protection for revolutionaries and their families, ensuring their safety. Second, it facilitated the transport of progressive youths to the Dayang Base Area to join the revolution, supplying capable cadres to the Central Fujian Party organization and guerrilla forces. Third, it conducted enemy surveillance and intelligence gathering to support armed struggle. During this period, Chen Changcheng frequently dispatched members to Chengxiang and other areas to gather information on the movements of the Kuomintang military and government, promptly providing valuable intelligence to the headquarters of the Central Fujian Detachment. Fourth, it raised funds, weapons, and supplies to support the logistics of the guerrilla forces. This was mainly achieved through donations from merchants within the Hanjiang business community, as well as fundraising from local gentry, to purchase items such as medicine, batteries, umbrellas, toothbrushes, Wanli shoes, and other daily necessities, along with fabrics, which were then transported to the Central Fujian Detachment headquarters in Dayang via underground routes. Additionally, Chen Changcheng and others donated or helped procure a total of seven firearms including pistols, rifles, and submachine guns, as well as over 500 rounds of various ammunition, which were delivered to the guerrillas to bolster their armaments. Fifth, it carried out united front work to garner support from enlightened local gentry for the revolutionary cause. Sixth, it distributed progressive publications such as Wen Hui Bao, Huashang Bao, and Masses, supporting the revolution and expanding revolutionary propaganda. Seventh, it engaged in defection-inducing efforts to weaken the internal governance of the Kuomintang, creating favorable conditions for a smooth takeover. Eighth, it raised food supplies for frontline support, aiding the Central Fujian Detachment and the People’s Liberation Army in liberating coastal areas of Fujian. On August 18, 1949, after the local defending forces in Hanjiang retreated southward following the escape of Chen Wenzhao, the then county magistrate of Putian under the Kuomintang, the Hanjiang Liaison Station, following Party instructions, mobilized enlightened gentry to form a Protection Corps. This group maintained public order, safeguarded public property, sealed archival materials to prevent enemy sabotage, and awaited the takeover by the People’s Government. At the same time, it assigned some progressive students who were on summer break to write slogans and leaflets, printing welcome editions in anticipation of liberation.
The former site of the Hanjiang Liaison Station is the former residence of Chen Jieren. Built in the early 20th century, it is a single-story brick-and-wood structure with two courtyards, facing south, covering an area of approximately 600 square meters, with a total of 12 rooms including the main hall. The front section consists of a lower room with one hall and two bedrooms, and the main gate is located on the eastern side of the courtyard. The first courtyard includes one hall and four bedrooms, with west-side wing rooms also situated around the courtyard; the rear section features one hall and two bedrooms, with a front courtyard.
