Site of the Former Garrison of the Minzhong Workers' and Peasants' Guerrilla Unit
The site of the former garrison of the Minzhong Workers' and Peasants' Guerrilla Unit is a classic red tourism attraction.
The site of the former garrison of the Minzhong Workers' and Peasants' Guerrilla Unit is located in Liukeng Natural Village, Liuxi Village, Zhangbian Town, Hanjiang District, Putian City.
In late July 1936, to escape the Kuomintang’s “encirclement and suppression” of the Changhai Base Area, the Minzhong Workers' and Peasants' Guerrilla Unit led some of the local populace out of the Puxian Border Guerrilla Base Area and moved to the mountainous area around Chishi in Zhangbian for concealment. Soon after, they relocated to Liuxi and set up camp at the Liuxi Palace for rest and reorganization. While conducting training and enforcing strict discipline within the Red Army guerrilla forces to improve the political awareness of the fighters, the guerrillas also mobilized and organized the masses to resist taxes and conscription, thereby expanding their political influence. At the same time, they carried out united front work—guerrilla representatives negotiated with local Big Sword Society organizations in nearby Qishan, Shangyuan, and Huanglong to promote national righteousness and the cause of resisting Japan and saving the nation. Eventually, agreements were reached to establish a united front and jointly counter the Kuomintang reactionaries. In addition, they persuaded and guided the villagers of Liuxi to resolve sectarian conflicts and formed a Red Guards unit dedicated to resisting the enemy and protecting the hometown, actively cooperating with the guerrillas in conducting partisan warfare. In October of the same year, upon learning that guerrilla forces were active in Liuxi, the Yongtai County Government of the Kuomintang dispatched security forces across the border to suppress the village. After being repelled by the guerrillas, they immediately sought reinforcements from the “Pacification Zone.” In late October, garrisons from Putian, Xianyou, and Yongtai counties launched a three-pronged “encirclement and suppression” operation against Liuxi. Due to the overwhelming disparity in strength between the enemy and the guerrillas, and in order to preserve their forces, the guerrillas voluntarily withdrew from Liuxi Palace and relocated to the concealed areas of Ningli and Qichaan.
Enraged by their failed suppression in Liuxi, the Kuomintang troops resorted to the “burn, kill, loot” scorched-earth policy, brutally victimizing the local population. Five civilian houses in Shangbai, Xinzhuang, Shangfang, and Xiadian were burned down, and militiamen Huang Tianlin and Hong Feng were shot dead by Kuomintang soldiers. Elders fled with their children, while young men, under the leadership of militiamen such as Huang Heshi, Huang Zhenwang, Huang Aiqu, and Huang Zhuchi, fought bloody battles against the Kuomintang army. The people of Liuxi made significant contributions in shielding the guerrillas, striking against the enemy, and supporting guerrilla activities.
The site of the former garrison of the Minzhong Workers' and Peasants' Guerrilla Unit was the Liuxi Palace, which was demolished in 1995 and rebuilt as Liuxi Primary School. The school building is a three-story brick-concrete structure facing south, with a staircase in the middle of each floor and two classrooms on either side. It covers an area of 260 square meters.
