Former Site of the CPC Putian Special Committee

The former site of the CPC Putian Special Committee is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the CPC Putian Special Committee is located in Xiayao Natural Village, Xiayao Village, Xinxian Town, Hanjiang District, Putian City.

In November 1930, the headquarters of the CPC Putian Special Committee moved from Baisha’s Aobing Township to Waikeng Township in Xinxian, setting up in Xiayao Village. Under the leadership of Deng Zihui, the committee secretary, the Red Army guerrillas carried out land reforms in Xiayao and Waikeng, actively recruiting revolutionary activists and expanding their forces. In December of the same year, the Soviet Government of Waikeng Township was established. After the formation of the Waikeng Soviet Area, its political influence quickly grew. Local residents urged the Red Army to come to their villages to fight local despots. In response, the Special Committee decided that the township militia would remain in Waikeng and Xiayao to defend the red regime, while the main Red Army forces would move outward to expand the Soviet area. Starting mid-December, the Second Red Detachment successively traveled to Baiyun, Siyang, Meiyang, Shuibang, Nantan, and Jinzhi to overthrow local tyrants and distribute wealth, earning strong support from poor farmers. The establishment of the Waikeng Soviet Government and the expanded activities of the Red Army guerrillas greatly alarmed the local Kuomintang authorities. Especially after Kuomintang Marines twice attempted assaults on the Soviet Area and were repelled, on December 27, a force of nearly 1,000 regular troops and local militias assembled by the garrison brigade surrounded the Red Army guerrillas who were fighting tyrants in Luwei Village. The guerrillas, finding themselves in a dilemma, were forced to fight back but were ultimately defeated due to being outnumbered. When Luwei Village came under siege, Deng Zihui, who stayed at the Special Committee headquarters in Xiayao, heard the gunfire, immediately sent out scouts to assess the situation, and ordered Ma Bei to lead the remaining Red Army and militia to launch a rescue mission. A small number of guerrillas managed to break through and gradually arrived in Xiayao. Given the overwhelming enemy strength, Deng Zihui decided to temporarily withdraw from Waikeng Township to preserve the revolutionary forces. Led by Ma Bei, Deng Zihui and others retreated toward the old revolutionary base in Dongdu, Baisha, and later convened an enlarged meeting of the Special Committee at the underground Party liaison station at the Shengsan Primary School in Qinhou Village, Wotang. It was decided to disband the Second Red Detachment, with four military cadres including Zhang Wei returning to the Western Fujian Soviet Area. Work in Putian was handed over to Wang Yujie, Jiang Sheng, and Guo Shouluan. Deng Zihui, under the protection of underground operatives, traveled via Jiangkou to Fuzhou and then continued on to Eastern Fujian to inspect party work.

The former site of the CPC Putian Special Committee is a two-story civil structure made of earth and wood, consisting of four rooms with a total area of 25 square meters. Due to years of neglect, it is in a rather dilapidated condition.
