Huajiahu Site

The Huajiahu Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The Huajiahu Site is located about 1,000 meters west of Hualou Village, Huajiahu Administrative Village, Lieshan Town, Lieshan District, Huaibei City, Anhui Province. The site sits slightly southeast of the center of the lake, featuring a mound-like terrain, and covers an area of approximately 33,000 square meters. In the middle of the site, there are several modern graves and a Ming Dynasty stone stele. The surface is scattered with pottery shards, tripod feet, li tripod feet, stone tool fragments, and red burned earth. Among the pottery, there are both sandy-clay and clay types, with the flat-chisel-shaped tripod feet characteristic of the Dawenkou culture being relatively common. Stone adzes and stone axes have also been discovered. The site is well-preserved, with a thick cultural layer, rich content, and a long period of continuity, making it a representative site of the Dawenkou culture phase in the Huaibei region. It provides valuable physical material for studying the history of the area. In October 2004, it was designated as a “Provincial Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit” by the People’s Government of Anhui Province.

The site is surrounded by mountains on three sides and is located slightly southeast of the center of Huajiahu Lake. It lies within a temperate continental monsoon climate zone, with Hualou West Mountain to its north and Washbasin Mountain to its northwest. The surrounding hills are lush with grass but have sparse tree cover.

Lieshan Town: Lieshan Town in Lieshan District is situated in the southeast of Huaibei City. It was formed by the merger of five original villages of Lieshan Town and Xincai Town. It borders Suzhou County to the east and is adjacent to Duji District to the north. The town covers an area of 116 square kilometers, with 51,000 mu of arable land and 62,000 mu of mountainous land. Its total population is about 73,200, governed by 20 villages and 190 villager groups. The city’s eastern outer ring road and the Hefei-Xuzhou Expressway pass through the area, while local roads such as Suixian, Xincai, Cai Si, and Qingning form a grid-like transportation network throughout the town.
