Huainan Martyrs' Cemetery

Huainan Martyrs' Cemetery is designated as a patriotic education base and a national defense education base.

Situated within the national 4A-level tourist attraction, Shangyao National Forest Park, Huainan Martyrs' Cemetery, along with the famous New Fourth Army Memorial Forest Scenic Area, functions as a key site for commemorating revolutionary martyrs, national defense education, patriotic education, and integrity education, as well as a platform for cultivating and practicing socialist core values. In 2015, the city’s Martyrs' Cemetery was successfully included in the second batch of Huainan's Patriotic Education Bases. It is currently managed by the Huainan Shangyao Forest Farm under the commission of the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, which oversees greening, sanitation, and daily maintenance.

The planned land area of Huainan Martyrs' Cemetery is 7.63 hectares. The first phase of the cemetery project covers a planned area of 420.54 square meters, with a total investment of over 3 million yuan, constructing 48 martyr burial plots. Construction began in March 2013 and was completed in February 2014. To date, 30 martyrs have been laid to rest. The second phase of the cemetery project is also actively being prepared, with efforts underway to commence construction as soon as possible.

The cemetery is solemn and dignified, with lush green grass and blooming flowers. The layout of the burial sites is rational and symmetrical, and the tomb designs are simple, elegant, and refined. On the black marble background wall above the burial area are engraved eight glistening golden characters written by Comrade Mao Zedong: “Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes.” There is a plaza both above and below the burial area; the upper plaza can accommodate flower baskets and wreaths for memorial purposes, while the lower plaza can host commemorative activities for up to 300 people.

To deeply honor the martyrs, inherit and carry forward their fine traditions, and further promote the spirit of the martyrs throughout society, the Huainan Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau has taken multiple measures. During key occasions such as Tomb-Sweeping Day and Martyrs' Memorial Day each year, a wide range of commemorative activities are actively carried out. The Bureau also ensures the reception and service work for public memorial visits, guaranteeing that these activities are safe, orderly, and respectful. According to statistics, during Tomb-Sweeping Day and Martyrs' Memorial Day, over 100 organizations including government agencies, groups, and schools, as well as more than 2,000 individuals from all walks of life—including over 1,000 minors—visit the cemetery. They engage in various forms of civilized memorial activities based on their own circumstances—some renew their party membership oaths at the cemetery, clean the grounds, offer wreaths and flower baskets to the martyrs’ graves, and learn about the deeds of revolutionary martyrs; others hold induction ceremonies for the Young Pioneers, Communist Youth League, or the Party, and participate in voluntary tree planting. On April 2 and September 30 each year, the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau organizes a commemorative activity for martyrs, led by key municipal party, government, and military leaders, as well as representatives from municipal departments, labor unions, youth leagues, women’s federations, county and district leaders, student league members, and veteran soldiers who have seen combat. These events receive extensive coverage from central and provincial mainstream media, fully realizing the role of martyr memorial facilities in “commemorating the martyrs and educating future generations.”
