Last updated 2026-09-24 — On June 16, 2012, Li Jiawei, then 53 and a taxi driver from Qingdao, planned to spend a year and a half cycling solo through 21 cities that have hosted the Summer Olympics. When our newspaper interviewed him in November last year, he had only one stop left—London. By the end of last year, he had completed his journey, covering a total distance of over 20,000...
O2O Drives RV Market Growth with SAIC MAXUS Leading the Trend

Intense competition, severe smog, and cramped urban spaces have made city dwellers increasingly eager to escape to nature. On weekends and during holidays, more and more people opt for self-driving trips.

RVs Enter Chinese Life

When traveling, aside from transportation issues on the road, accommodation and dining can also be challenging. Even with careful planning, unexpected situations often arise, causing various travel headaches. Believe it or not, during national holiday highway toll-free periods or at some hard-to-reach scenic spots, many self-driving tourists have experienced being stuck on the road for over ten hours with no food or supplies. ——But if you own an RV, you can turn traffic jams into leisure time: set up an awning, take out foldable tables and chairs, and enjoy an afternoon tea; or switch on the kitchen mode, cook a lavish meal, and make neighboring luxury car owners green with envy.

In fact, in developed countries like Europe and the U.S., RV travel and camping have a history of over a hundred years. In the U.S., there are more than 10 million RVs, with 10% of households owning one. Driving or towing an RV for holidays has become a normalized way of travel.

In China, although there are only about 200 RV campsites nationwide, the current RV ownership has reached around 20,000. In 2013, the State Council issued the "National Tourism and Leisure Outline," which explicitly encouraged RV tourism and the development of infrastructure such as self-drive and RV campsites.

Especially in recent years, RV prices in the domestic market have been steadily decreasing, gradually aligning with Western levels. For example, the basic model of SAIC MAXUS’s V80 RV is only 200,000 yuan, while the luxury version is just 400,000–500,000 yuan—comparable to a mid-sized family car. RVs are increasingly shifting from luxury items to mass-market consumer goods, bringing RV travel closer to everyday Chinese life.

Online Car Shopping on the Rise

Several years ago, automakers began exploring the online space. Brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Geely Panda dipped their toes into e-commerce, but initial efforts gained little traction. In 2013, with major players like Tmall and Autohome ramping up their Double Eleven campaigns, online car shopping gradually emerged as a new channel for vehicle purchases.

However, compared to regular cars, RVs have more functions, greater demand for customization and personalization, and are less standardized. The purchasing process is also more complex. For instance, SAIC MAXUS RVs come equipped with high-quality lighting, audio-visual entertainment systems, thoughtfully designed interiors, and amenities like air conditioning, refrigerators, built-in induction cooktops, and hot water systems—all of which benefit from firsthand experience and are unlikely to be fully understood or purchased solely online. Even with an online order, customers still need to visit a 4S store to inspect, test, and pick up the vehicle. Post-purchase procedures such as vehicle registration, insurance, and loans are involved, along with ongoing after-sales service, all of which require dealer support.

O2O Raises Service Standards

In response, SAIC MAXUS took consumer needs into full consideration and partnered with CheXiang.com, China’s first O2O e-commerce platform for automobiles. Leveraging CheXiang.com’s platform advantages, SAIC MAXUS not only catered to the personalized and cost-effective preferences of online car buyers—adding exclusive internet-customized features like amber gold trim, dynamic rear spoilers, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and stylish side steps to its full-size MPV G10 model—but also offered four exclusive gifts for early reservation customers. These included a premium Black Gold Card, maintenance vouchers, practical car accessories, and a valuable 5,000-yuan Jiuchang CheXiang gift package. For the V80 customized RV edition, it featured user-friendly options like a foldable awning and ladder, along with a complimentary two-night RV experience for two.

To help dispel the unfamiliarity many people feel toward RVs and introduce them to the spirit of exploration, comfort, quality, and freedom embodied in RV culture, SAIC MAXUS has, since 2012, launched the “New Journey, New Enjoyment” RV lifestyle concept and experience campaign aimed at urban elites. To date, three seasons have been held. The first season’s Foodie Road Trip from Shanghai to Xiangshan, Qiyun Mountain, Wuhan, and Chongqing featured seafood, Huizhou cuisine, street snacks, and hotpot. The second season’s Adventure Tour from Chengdu to Ya’an, Liangshan, Dali, Pu’er, Jinghong, and Kunming immersed travelers in Southwest China’s culture. The third season’s Lifestyle Journey from Shanghai to Hangzhou, Beijing, and Qingdao explored coastal towns. Alongside these, weekend getaways, family trips, and World Cup watch parties were organized, showcasing the diverse possibilities of RV living to thousands of enthusiasts. These experiences not only highlighted the outstanding quality of SAIC MAXUS RVs but also allowed customers to experience the brand’s eight service commitments, including a comprehensive after-sales support system encompassing 24/7 free roadside assistance, trip continuation guarantees, one-hour emergency response, 24-hour customer service, 48-hour fault resolution, and differentiated value-added services. All of this delivered the true meaning of “travel worry-free” and enabled spontaneous “just-go” adventures.

In this sense, SAIC MAXUS has ushered in the O2O era for China’s RV market. In an increasingly competitive landscape of auto e-commerce, the service landscape and standards of China’s commercial vehicle industry are set to evolve. Those who can deliver greater value to consumers will win the market’s favor.
