Hokkaido Lilac Festival, Sapporo adorned with vibrant purple and white blossoms

Vibrant and colorful Sapporo is Hokkaido’s largest city, where many travelers begin their wonderful journeys to Japan’s northern reaches. After the long snow season, the soft pink cherry blossoms kick off Hokkaido’s spring, followed swiftly by the arrival of early summer. Odori Park is the city’s most famous venue for festivals, hosting world-renowned snow, flower, and summer celebrations. Among the hundreds of blooming lilac trees—showcasing both white and purple blossoms—Odori Park offers a variety of lively events, including sapling giveaways, musical performances, and outdoor tea parties.

When visiting Odori Park, be sure to try the corn sold by vendors there—it’s the park’s must-try “specialty”! The corn sold in the park is locally grown in Hokkaido, unbelievably tender and sweet, as if the essence of Hokkaido’s agricultural produce is condensed into every kernel. During the festival, you can see Sapporo locals leisurely enjoying grilled corn in the park or walking around with one in hand, while pigeons gather to peck at the corn kernels on the ground, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere.

Following the Lilac Festival is the high-energy “YOSAKOI SORAN” festival, a traditional event originating from Kochi Prefecture, known for its large and lively dance troupes—with over 100 teams participating. Young students wear costumes they’ve designed themselves, turning the streets into their stage as they freely dance with youthful moves and boundless imagination, from day till night. The four-day dance festival always builds to thrilling climaxes. This year’s event, now in its 19th year, runs from June 9 to 13, and invites all visitors to join in the fun and shake those hips to the beat.
