The romantic Southern European-style lighthouse in "Look for a Star"::Guia Fortress

Macao, which has transformed from a small fishing village into an emerging tourist destination, covers only 28.2 square kilometers. Yet according to statistics, despite the 2008 financial crisis, visitor numbers surpassed 31 million in 2008. What kind of scenery gives Macau such charm? A glimpse can be found in the romantic comedy "Look for a Star," starring Andy Lau and Shu Qi and directed by "Infernal Affairs" filmmaker John Woo, which premiered in Taiwan in March 2008. Every scene showcases Macau’s elegance and lets you feel the sweet vibes of Southern Europe.

In the movie, the male lead Cheng Zhongsen (played by Andy Lau) tells the female lead Xue Milan (played by Shu Qi) that he wants to find someone who can hear his heartbeat. On a quiet night, as they stand before Guia Fortress, Milan clearly hears Zhongsen’s beautiful thumping heartbeat—and their romantic first kiss naturally follows.

This kiss-under-the-stars spot—Guia Fortress was built in 1622 and was once a military restricted area. In 1865, the Guia Lighthouse, also known as “Monte Fort Lighthouse,” officially opened. It is the oldest lighthouse in the Far East. In addition to guiding ships at sea, it also had weather forecasting functions. Even today, warning signs for typhoons can still be seen along the entrance passage. Beside the lighthouse is the Chapel of Our Lady of Snows, which was completed at the same time as the fortress and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, regarded by the Portuguese as the guardian deity of navigation. During a renovation project in 1966, murals depicting biblical stories in Chinese painting styles were unexpectedly discovered. To this day, it is still unknown whether they were painted by the Portuguese or Chinese artists, but they are extremely rare church murals. The small cave on the left side of the chapel clearly shows Chinese-style artwork featuring lions, adding a rich cultural and artistic heritage to Macau...
