Free ride on the Furano Ropeway offers a breathtaking aerial view of lavender fields
Purple-hued Furano, surrounded by blooming lavender fields in early summer, is the most beautiful season in Hokkaido’s central region. The area boasts over ten lavender farms that often serve as filming locations for TV shows, movies, and Hokkaido promotional posters. This summer, visitors to Furano can not only immerse themselves in the sea of purple but also enjoy a free ride on the Furano Ropeway to take in the stunning panoramic views of the lavender fields from above.
A vast expanse of purple flowers
The “Furano Ropeway,” located next to the New Furano Prince Hotel, will operate during the summer season from June 5 to October 17 to accommodate visitors coming to see the lavender in full bloom. Riders must first pick up a free ticket at the “Furano Biei Wide Area Tourism International Center” inside the North Peak Terminal of the Furano Ski Resort. Passengers are required to show their passport for verification and fill in their name and nationality in the registration book. The free ticket is valid for one round-trip ride only.
Furano is the largest lavender-growing region in Hokkaido, where the purple romantic lavender fields hold more tourism value than agricultural worth. Various types of lavender bloom at different times depending on the variety. In general, lavender in Furano begins to blossom in mid-June and continues through late September, with different varieties taking turns in bloom. However, the most vibrant and beautiful period is around mid-July to early August, which also coincides with the peak tourist season for flower viewing.

Riding the ropeway to admire the lavender not only offers sweeping views of the unrestrained purple landscapes but also allows you to see sunflowers, poppies, Gypsophila, sage, and begonias.
