Snow falls in Taipei’s East District as Toyama Prefecture’s all-season tourism charm is rediscovered

The “Snow Valley,” which opens in mid-April each year, has become an iconic symbol of Toyama with its towering snow walls. This year’s “Toyama Prefecture Tourism & Product Exhibition” specially transported snow collected from Mount Tateyama at over 2,000 meters above sea level, boxed it, and shipped it via Korea and Keelung Port to SOGO, where it appeared as a cute snowman—allowing Taiwanese visitors to experience the majestic snowy landscape. In addition to tourism information about Toyama on the first floor of SOGO, the basement level 2 showcases a variety of Toyama delicacies, including the famous station bento “Trout Sushi,” “White Shrimp Tempura” and “Oden” made with Toyama’s unique white shrimp, beautiful wagashi (Japanese sweets), as well as local specialties such as Firefly Squid Pickles and Koshihikari Rice. Visitors can also watch Japanese chefs carefully prepare the food.

Following the conclusion of the cherry blossom festival and the opening ceremony of the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, the upcoming summer festivities featuring fireworks over the sea and the sailing ship Nippon Maru are not to be missed. This year, the Murodo Station will host a Summer Snow Park from June 1 to June 20, while the spectacular water release at the Kurobe Dam from June 26 to October 15 is a must-experience event. The newly greened scenery of the gassho-style buildings is also captivating, and local traditional performances like “Tsuchikko Dance” along with homestay cuisine are memorable highlights.

The “Toyama Prefecture Tourism & Product Exhibition” offers a comprehensive glimpse into the region’s all-season tourism appeal and exclusive culinary offerings. From now until May 16, in addition to learning about travel information, visitors can also sample and shop for Toyama foods. Customers spending over NT$500 will have the chance to receive free local products such as Toyama regional sake.
