The Spring Feast in Hokkaido: Sapporo Lilac Festival Begins

After a long winter, spring in Hokkaido is arriving with the onset of May. In addition to the purple lavender fields of Furano, the various beautiful blooms such as lilacs and lilies of the valley in Sapporo add a splash of color. This year’s Sapporo Lilac Festival kicks off at Odori Park from May 16 to 31. Following that, in early June, the energetic “YOSAKOI SORAN” Festival will be held, allowing visitors to experience the unique charm of Sapporo in spring and summer.

Odori Park is the most famous festival venue in Sapporo, hosting both the renowned Sapporo Snow Festival in winter and the Lilac Festival in spring. During the event, up to 400 lilac trees burst into bloom with their gorgeous white and purple flowers. On the first day of the festival, there is also a lilac sapling giveaway, along with exciting programs such as musical performances and outdoor tea parties to celebrate the arrival of spring and enjoy the comfortable sunshine and greenery.

Following the Lilac Festival is the high-energy “YOSAKOI SORAN” Festival, a traditional event originating from Kochi Prefecture, known for its large and lively dance troupes, with over 100 teams participating. Young students wear costumes they designed themselves, turning the streets into their stage as they freely dance with youthful moves and imagination, from day till night. The four-day dance festival is always filled with climactic moments. This year’s event runs from June 10 to 14, inviting all visitors to join in the fun and shake those hips to the rhythm.
