TEDA Tropical Botanical Garden serves as a science education base.

The TEDA Tropical Botanical Garden spans 27,000 square meters in land area and has a total constructed area of 5,553 square meters. It is composed of a large pyramid, a small pyramid, and a connecting corridor between them. In addition to featuring the country’s only "Bottle Tree," the entire botanical garden is highly modernized and intelligent. Through electronic devices, visitors can explore plants and natural landscapes from across the planet, making it feel as though the entire natural world has been relocated to TEDA.

Rooted in what was once a saline-alkali wasteland, the TEDA Tropical Botanical Garden in Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area is a fascinating destination that captivates all who visit. Completed in 2003, it consists of two glass pyramids connected by a 55-meter arched glass corridor—the larger and smaller pyramids resembling a mother and child. The larger base measures 50x50 meters with a height of 30.88 meters, while the smaller one spans 2x25 meters and stands 15.5 meters tall. Both pyramids are constructed from a combination of glass and steel, showcasing the material’s properties with innovative, sleek designs that are pioneering in China. Surrounded by floral displays and water features, the pyramids resemble dazzling diamonds set on a green platter—crystal-clear and brimming with modern flair. The transparent, steel-framed glass curtain wall structure has been lauded by renowned structural curtain wall experts in China as achieving two firsts: the largest pure steel-structured main body and point-supported cable-stayed glass curtain wall pyramid in the country, as well as the nation’s first green, eco-friendly, fully intelligent glass curtain wall. With a simple yet rational layout, the glass curtain wall and the main structure are effectively integrated through a uniquely designed stainless steel component and cable system, creating a seamless harmony with nature.

Stepping into the larger pyramid, a cool breeze greets you along with a sea of greenery, as the hustle and bustle of the city fades away. This is the Four Seasons Garden, divided into four plant zones: palm, aquatic, flowering & fruiting, and fern. Within this compact space, a magical world is crafted, leading visitors step-by-step into a poetic and picturesque realm. Utilizing high-tech methods, the botanical garden automatically controls various ecological elements to maintain optimal temperature and humidity inside the pyramid, keeping spring in full bloom all year round. Without leaving the garden, you can experience landscapes from thousands of miles away. Here, you can admire the dense forest scenery of Xishuangbanna, with towering king coconuts over ten meters high, waterfalls, swimming fish, moss, and lotus flowers. The most eye-catching attraction in the garden is the country’s unique Bottle Tree, which was imported from Australia. It weighs 9 tonnes, has a diameter of 2.5 meters, and is valued at 360,000 RMB.

The garden is divided into the small and large pyramids. The small pyramid houses several-meter-tall plants native to South America, such as Echinocactus grusonii, Cereus peruvianus, Lophophora williamsii, Echinocactus, and Mammillaria. The large pyramid adopts the design techniques of classical Chinese landscape gardens to create a multi-angle, multi-layered scenic space. The Four Seasons Garden is roughly divided into a palm plant zone, an aquatic plant zone, a flowering and fruiting plant zone, and a fern and epiphytic plant zone.

The small pyramid houses a desert botanical garden, which offers a sharp contrast to the humid and hot climate of the Four Seasons Garden. Here, the air is dry and water is nowhere to be seen. The desert botanical garden mainly cultivates drought-resistant succulent and cactus plants. The tallest cactus column reaches 5 meters, while the smallest living stone plant is less than 1.5 centimeters—showcasing a stark size difference like that between an elephant and an ant. The hedgehog-like cactus, scientifically known as Echinocactus grusonii, comes in various sizes and heights, with some large specimens having a diameter of about 1 meter, emerald-green spheres, and golden spines that are a delight to behold. There are also two peculiar plants: one is the “bachelor tree,” whose branches are bare and leafless, resembling a dead tree—though upon closer inspection, these branches are actually segments of varying thicknesses made of green, fleshy columns; the other is the red-flowered, green-leaved cactus herb, with spiral-shaped leaves that look like flowers but are even more stunning than actual blooms.

The entire botanical garden is highly modernized and intelligent. Visitors can explore plants and natural landscapes from around the world through electronic devices, as if the entire natural world has been brought to TEDA.
