Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall
The Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall serves as both a science education base and a patriotic education base.
Located along the beautiful Haihe River and within the renowned Italian Style Street Conservation Area (No. 30 Bo’ai Avenue, Hebei District, Tianjin), stands a majestic beige-toned building. With its bright modern style and rich exotic charm, this magnificent structure is the Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall (hereinafter referred to as the Exhibition Hall). Adjacent to Tianjin Railway Station—the terminal of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway—the Exhibition Hall faces the Binjiangdao and Heping Road commercial streets across the river, not far from the iconic Tianjin Jinwan Plaza. Covering a construction area of approximately 15,000 m² and an exhibition area of around 10,000 m², the hall is divided into three floors and 16 exhibition zones.
Exhibition Zone Introduction
The Exhibition Hall has carefully considered spatial layout and visitor flow, ensuring clear thematic threads and well-organized exhibits. The space is bright and open, with uniquely designed displays. Within a unified, simple, and fresh style, each zone reflects different backgrounds, contents, and historical contexts. The first floor includes the History Exhibition Zone, Master Plan Exhibition Zone, Transportation Planning Exhibition Zone, Central City Planning Model Exhibition Zone, Public Notice Zone, and Temporary Exhibition Zone. The second floor features the Binhai New Area Planning Exhibition Zone, Haihe River Planning Exhibition Zone, Historic City Protection Planning Exhibition Zone, Tourism Planning Exhibition Zone, and the Haihe Journey 4D Cinema. The third floor houses the Housing and Public Facilities Planning Exhibition Zone, Ecological Planning Exhibition Zone, Environmental Improvement Exhibition Zone, Key Area Planning Exhibition Zone, District and County Planning Exhibition Zone, Urban Image Cinema, and Public Interactive Participation Zone. The fourth floor is dedicated to office areas and a multifunctional hall. Major exhibition zones include:
The History Exhibition Zone boasts an elegant and classic style with a calm color palette. As visitors step inside, they feel as though they are journeying through the ancient and storied corridors of history—experiencing firsthand the vicissitudes and glory of the former “Three Forks River Confluence.” Through the birth, evolution, development, and rapid growth of a city, visitors gain a deep understanding of the concepts and progression of urban and rural planning, and truly sense the long trajectory of Tianjin’s evolution and development.
The Central City Planning Model and its accompanying demonstration system occupy the entire shared space of the Tianjin Hall and represent the most captivating exhibition area in the entire venue. Visitors can watch from the VIP viewing platform on the second floor. The massive LED screen and model form a synchronized audiovisual and lighting demonstration system that immerses the public as if they are amidst the rapid urban development of Tianjin. Amidst the intense impact and inspiration, the future urban planning vision and beautiful blueprint of Tianjin’s 371-square-kilometer central city area are deeply imprinted on their minds.
The Binhai New Area Exhibition Zone is a highly contemporary-themed section of the Tianjin Hall. Visitors can vividly and comprehensively perceive the Binhai New Area—China’s future third economic growth pole—and gain detailed insights into its clear planning vision and future development blueprint.
The Haihe Journey Cinema utilizes high-tech features such as an 180-degree curved screen, dynamic seating, and surround sound to powerfully stimulate the audience’s auditory, visual, and tactile senses. Visitors can fully experience the sensation of boating along the Haihe River and strolling through the city, gaining a profound appreciation for the Haihe River—the mother river of Tianjin.
The Urban Image Cinema is equipped with an 180-degree curved screen, offering a wide and expansive view. The 8-minute film “Soaring Tianjin” enables the public to vividly and concretely grasp various aspects of Tianjin’s master urban plan, deeply feel the city’s development over the past 600 years since its establishment, clearly sense the pulse of its rapid contemporary progress, and proudly envision the grand blueprint of Tianjin’s future.
The Public Interactive Participation Zone leaves a lasting impression on every visitor through the use of multi-channel projection, touch screens, and other high-tech methods. It features an information inquiry area for Tianjin government affairs and offers a variety of engaging urban planning mini-games. Visitors can personally simulate planning and design, thereby truly understanding the critical importance of urban and rural planning to city development.
Visitor Reception
Since its official opening on January 23, 2009, up to April 30, 2010, the Exhibition Hall has received over 1,092,660 visitors, conducted more than 12,290 guided tours, and hosted 1,708 groups including central leaders and provincial/ministerial-level officials, totaling over 31,454 people. Within a year, it ranked first in visitor volume among domestic planning exhibition halls, becoming a showcase for Tianjin’s urban image, an important platform for investment attraction, and a base for patriotic and civic education.
Robert Lawrence Kuhn, a well-known American author to many Chinese for his works such as “The Man Who Changed China: The Life and Legacy of Jiang Zemin” and “How China’s Leaders Think,” visited our museum despite a tight schedule. He said: “This leadership team is forward-thinking and highly strategic. This Planning Exhibition Hall is larger than I imagined—it has a grand presence, not only in its architecture and exterior but, more importantly, in demonstrating a scientifically sound direction and vision for the city’s future development. It emphasizes culture and ecological preservation, which in my view are concrete manifestations of the Scientific Outlook on Development.” “This planning exhibition not only shows that Tianjin is the economic leader of northern China, driving the development of the entire region, but also demonstrates to the world that while China develops its economy, it is also advancing high technology, improving living environments, and achieving sustainable development.”
According to a public satisfaction survey on the free opening of cultural venues, citizens gave the highest approval rating—98.4%—to the Exhibition Hall's openness. In May 2009, the Tianjin Planning Exhibition Hall was also named a Tianjin Patriotic Education Base. It fulfills the roles of: “building a bridge to transparent planning through its methods, establishing an academic exchange hall through its venue, showcasing the city’s charm to the world through its window, and serving as an educational platform for the public.”
