Liang Qichao’s Former Residence

     Liang Qichao’s Former Residence

Liang Qichao was a highly influential figure in modern China. From 1915, when he took up residence in Tianjin, this home accompanied him through the last 10 years of his life.

This Western-style two-story building features Italian architectural style, with a front and a rear structure, exuding an elegant and distinctive design. The front building serves as the main house and includes a basement, along with a garden, a garage, and a telegraph room.

Notably, there is the Ice-Drinking Studio (Yinbing Shi), a small white two-story building. The first floor is a study, while the second floor contains bedrooms and a sitting room—where Liang Qichao completed his later writings.

Liang Qichao’s Former Residence is located at No. 44 Minzu Road, Hebei District, Tianjin, while the Ice-Drinking Studio is at No. 46 Minzu Road. These two residences were built on land purchased from Zhou Guoxian in the early Republic of China period on the former Italian Concession’s West Ma Road. The front building is the main residence, featuring a basement, with nine rooms on each of the first and second floors. The entire complex is divided into two sections: the eastern half is reserved for Liang himself, including a small study, living room, and bedroom area; the western half is family housing. The rear building is an auxiliary structure that includes a kitchen, boiler room, storage room, and servant quarters. A corridor and sky bridge connect the front and rear buildings. The entire compound covers over 1,100 square meters, with the main house constructed of brick and wood, featuring a cement finish with decorative patterns, uniquely shaped red tiles, stone steps, and double-sash windows—making it quite exquisite. The grounds include a garden, a garage, and a guardhouse.

The Ice-Drinking Studio is located at No. 46 Minzu Road, Hebei District, connected to the residence (No. 44 Minzu Road), and was built in 1924 as a light gray two-story Western-style house. The front of the building features three small arched halls, with stone steps on either side of the entrance and a central pool adorned with a carved stone beast that continuously spouts water. The first floor centers around a large hall, surrounded by five rooms—five in total—with one serving as a utility room, and the others as studies and a library. The second floor, near the northwest corner, also has a large hall, and several rooms to the southeast are mainly used as bedrooms or reading rooms. Liang Qichao spent his later years here working on his writings.

The Ice-Drinking Studio was designed by Italian architect Paladino. It features a courtyard veranda style with an enclosed canopy. The architecture is uniquely designed—the central hall is essentially a canopy over the courtyard, which rises above the roof and is inlaid with stained glass. The building has a total of 34 rooms and covers a construction area of 949.5 square meters.
