Huanghai Chemical Industry Research Society

The Huanghai Chemical Industry Research Society is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

In August 1922, Mr. Fan Xudong, founder of Tianjin Bohua Yongli Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., established the Huanghai Chemical Industry Research Society (hereinafter referred to as the "Huanghai Society"). It was the first private chemical research institution in China.

In its early days, the Huanghai Society mainly assisted the then Jiuda Refined Salt Company and Yongli Alkali Factory (now Tianjin Bohua Yongli Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.) in analyzing raw materials and fuels, experimenting with the application of the Changlu salt brine, researching the theory and applications of the chemical industry, assisting chemical industrial entrepreneurs in engineering planning, improving efficiency in chemical plant operations, and promoting the development of China’s chemical industry and natural sciences.

After the victory of the War of Resistance, the Huanghai Society raised funds, selected a new site, acquired the Qingdao Huacheng Factory, and sent several batches of personnel abroad for advanced studies, cultivating a large number of scientific and technological talents for the development of China’s chemical industry.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Huanghai Society was incorporated into the Chinese Academy of Sciences in December 1951, becoming the Institute of Industrial Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In October 1952, it was renamed the Third Division of the Preparatory Office of the Comprehensive Industrial Testing Institute under the Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Central People’s Government. Thus, the private Huanghai Chemical Industry Research Society completed its historical mission and was recorded in history for its remarkable scientific achievements over 30 years.

Today, the Huanghai Society retains intact architecture and serves as a National Patriotic Education Base for the chemical industry system, as well as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. In 1994, it was designated as a Tianjin Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the municipal Party committee and government.

In May 2013, the Huanghai Chemical Industry Research Society was listed as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
