In 2004, on the 40th anniversary of the Dagang Oilfield. To highlight the contributions of Well Gang 5 and the first generation of Dagang oil workers to the development of the oilfield, Dagang Oilfield Group Corporation, Dagang Oilfield Company, and Dagang Petrochemical Company jointly established the Gang 5 Well Monument and named Well Gang 5 as the Discovery Well of the Dagang Oilfield.

The inscription reads: Discovery Well of Dagang Oilfield — Well Gang 5

On January 5, 1964, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China approved the organization of the North China Petroleum Exploration Campaign. On December 20, 1964, Well Gang 5 gushed high-yield oil and gas. Because Well Gang 5 is located in the Beidagang structural belt, the oilfield was thus named Dagang Oilfield.

The three major companies of the oil region jointly erected this monument to highlight the significant importance of Well Gang 5 in the development history of the Dagang Oilfield, to commemorate the great achievements of generations of Dagang oil workers in building the petroleum industry, and to inspire future generations to keep pace with the times and create new glories.
