Haihe Tidal Barrier

The Haihe Tidal Barrier is a protected cultural heritage site of Tianjin Municipality.

The Haihe Tidal Barrier is located at the mouth of the Haihe River in Tanggu District, Tianjin. It is a large-scale water control project that serves multiple purposes, including flood discharge, tidal defense, freshwater storage, and navigation.

Its main functions include discharging part of the floodwaters from the convergence of the Ziya, Daqing, South Canal, North Canal, and Yongding rivers into the sea through the main course of the Haihe River. It also provides flood control, drainage, tidal defense, and freshwater storage, making it a crucial hydraulic control structure along the Haihe River.

Since its completion, the project has played a significant role in Tianjin’s economic development by managing drainage and supplying water for industrial, agricultural, and domestic use. The historically recorded maximum flood occurred on August 28, 1963, when the maximum measured flow reached 1,698 m³/s. At that time, all eight gates of the Haihe Tidal Barrier were fully opened to allow uninterrupted discharge.

The main structure of the Haihe Tidal Barrier is one of Tianjin’s renowned scenic attractions. The control towers on both banks of the barrier feature classical Chinese architectural styles, exuding grandeur and elegance. The eastern tower’s wall is inlaid with an inscription by Comrade Zhu De dedicated to the construction of the Haihe Barrier project.
