Outside Lake

The water area from the base of the Huating Lake Dam down to the foot of Longshan Mountain is commonly known as the “Outside Lake.” It stretches 2,000 meters in length, with a width of 100–600 meters and an average depth of 3–4 meters, covering a total surface area of 600,000 square meters. To the south lies the majestic Changhe Extra-Large Bridge of the Hefei–Jiujiang Railway, which spans the emerald waters like a giant dragon—a spectacular sight. To the north are small islets, on which Huoliang Pavilion is built. The pavilion has two levels connected by a fan-shaped staircase, and is also linked to Chahua Road via a winding bridge, giving it a unique design. The surrounding hills are lush and shaded by dense green trees, especially enchanting in the early morning and evening when mist shrouds the mountains, creating a scene that resembles a fairyland. In the open southern part of the lake, recreational and hospitality facilities such as a fishing platform are under development, making it an ideal spot for boating and fishing. Across the lake lies Longzhu Mountain, where the Taihu Martyrs’ Cemetery is located. The words “Martyrs’ Cemetery” are inscribed in calligraphy by the former President of China. The hillside where the cemetery is situated was originally the site of Fahua Temple, which was one of the Four Scenic Spots of Taihu—the “Fahua Square Bamboo.” Over time, the bamboo has disappeared. Today, Longzhu Mountain is covered with verdant pines, cypresses, willows, and bamboos, offering year-round greenery and a solemn, respectful atmosphere. Beneath this mountain lie the remains of 22 martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the revolutionary war years. The Evergreen Martyrs’ Cemetery serves as an important site for patriotic and revolutionary heroism education.
