Lingying Chan Temple is located on Ling Mountain, north of Xiaochi Town and east of Taihu County, Anqing City, Anhui Province. The founding main hall faces west and looks toward Lotus Peak, with its back against the Lingying Stone. To the left stands the Azure Dragon's Gratitude Pagoda, bathed in the radiance of Buddha’s light, while to the right lies the White Tiger, crouching to guard the mountain gate. Truly, it is an exquisitely scenic and auspicious feng shui site. “The land retains its relics of glory, nature itself enshrines a sacred presence.” Lingying Temple derives its name from the Lingying Stone. This mystical Lingying Stone, anciently known as the Spirit Immortal Stone, is a natural formation that absorbs the essence of heaven and earth and is imbued with the radiance of sun and moon. Viewed from below, the stone is towering and majestic, emanating a unique brilliance. Its top resembles a lotus flower, with a hidden stone gate in the middle, and the texture of a monk’s robe faintly visible on its surface. Even more astonishing is the apparition of the Bodhisattva Lingying, whose serene visage clearly emerges beside the stone, with vividly lifelike features. Legend has it that a golden cup and ivory chopsticks were once hidden inside the stone chamber, but after a greedy person borrowed them and failed to return them, the Heavenly Emperor, enraged, ordered the Thunder God to seal the stone gate. Another tale tells of two ancient travelers—a monk and a Taoist—who, by fate, arrived here. They found the stone chamber unmanned, yet the immortal stone was spiritually responsive, granting every prayer. As a result, many came to burn incense and worship the stone. Hence the enduring phrase: “No monks sweep the stone room, the wind does it instead; green hills accompany the moon, which lights the lamp.”
