Tomb of Ge Yunfei (including his former residence)

The Tomb of Ge Yunfei (including his former residence) is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.

The Tomb of Ge Yunfei (including his former residence), located on the north side of Huangwan Temple in Sanquan Village, Suoqian Town, Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, consists of the Gongbao Mansion and the Ge Ancestral Hall.

The Tomb of Ge Yunfei is situated on the southern slope of Shiban Mountain, oriented fifty degrees southeast, and constructed with stone blocks. It is enclosed by a wall with stone slab roofing and carved tubular and flat tiles. The main structure has five bays, with the central three bays recessed inward. The middle bay houses a stele inscribed with “Tomb of Ge Zhuangjie, the Valiant Duke, Posthumously Honored as Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince and Granted the Title of General Zhenwei.” The central ridge beam is inscribed with “Loyalty Worthy of Admiration.” In front, there is an offering table, and the ground is paved with stone slabs. The two side bays project outward, aligning with the front edges of the middle and side rooms, enclosed by railings. The stone pillars are 2.65 meters high, with lion heads carved at the top. The tomb mound is 7.65 meters wide and 7.7 meters deep. In the distance, layers of hills rise, while nearby fruit trees flourish, creating a solemn and tranquil atmosphere.

Ge Yunfei’s former residence is located in Shantoubu Village, Jinhua Town, Xiaoshan District, and consists of the Gongbao Mansion and the Ge Ancestral Hall. The Gongbao Mansion, built during the Qing Dynasty, is the birthplace of Ge Yunfei. The surviving structure is a two-story building with a five-bay-wide main section and two wing rooms. The Ge Ancestral Hall, built in the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty, was where Ge Yunfei studied. It consists of a front hall, main hall, and wing rooms.

The Gongbao Mansion and Ge Ancestral Hall, parts of Ge Yunfei’s former residence, are the birthplace, upbringing place, and educational grounds of the national hero Ge Yunfei. They serve as important sites for commemorating martyrs and promoting patriotism. Both structures were built during the Qing Dynasty and are typical examples of Jiangnan-style residential and ancestral architecture.

At the age of seven, he began attending private school, studying both literature and martial arts. He admired Yue Fei, the national hero of the Southern Song Dynasty, and kept in mind the maxim “Civil officials should not be greedy for money; military officials should not fear death.” In the 19th year of the Jiaqing reign (1814), he passed the imperial martial examination and became a martial student. In the 24th year, he passed the martial examination for recommended candidates.
