HuiLan Bridge

HuiLan Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou City.

HuiLan Bridge is located to the north of the Xiaoshan Mental Hospital in Chengxiang Town. Built in 1792, the bridge has a total length of 21.4 meters, a span of 8.8 meters, a height of 5.45 meters, and a width of 3.8 meters. There are 21 stone steps on both the northern and southern sides. Stone plaques inscribed with couplets are embedded on the eastern and western stone walls of the bridge. The upper line reads, “Half the market’s seven bridges amply attest to the dense population of the eastern land,” and the lower line reads, “One river’s six pagodas converge as southern flows enhance local prosperity,” reflecting the prosperity of Xiaoshan at that time.

As for their meaning: “Half the market’s seven bridges,” if listed from east to west starting from HuiLan Bridge, are: HuiLan Bridge, Dongyang Bridge, Ban Bridge, Fengyan Bridge, Jiangsi Bridge (also known as Mengbi Bridge), Cang Bridge, and Shixin Bridge. “One river’s six pagodas” have been lost to time and cannot be listed in detail. However, from memory, there was an ancient pagoda to the north of the former Datong Bridge (a stone arch bridge demolished in the 1980s) in the southern part of the city. This pagoda was torn down during the Great Leap Forward era. It was said that a blue-and-white porcelain vase, a bronze mirror used to suppress the pagoda, and some thread-bound sutras were unearthed from the base. There was also an ancient pagoda in the former Longxing Temple (near what was then the grain bureau warehouse) at the foot of Xishan Mountain in the western part of the city.

HuiLan North Garden Community: Established in April 2002, HuiLan North Garden Community in Chengxiang Subdistrict is bordered by Tonghui Road to the east, Yucailu Road to the west, Renmin Road to the south, and Xiaoshao Road to the north. It mainly consists of five residential areas: HuiLan North Garden, Jingyuan Apartment, Sunshine Huating, Xueshi Bridge, and Xuelin Shangyuan.
