Former Residence of Tang Shouqian

The former residence of Tang Shouqian is a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou City.

The former residence of Tang Shouqian is located in Datangwu Village, Jinhua Town.

The residence consists of the north section of a three-room wooden building facing west, comprising one upper and one lower floor — the house where Tang Shouqian was born.

Not far from the main residence lies the old house, a traditional quadrangle courtyard with a pond in front. The courtyard includes three rooms in the main hall, three wing rooms on each of the east and west sides, and a central courtyard.

Tang Shouqian (1856–1917), originally named Zhen, with the courtesy name Zhexian and also known as Zhexian, was a native of Datangwu Village, Xiaoshan County, Qing Dynasty. As a youth, he studied in his hometown and was “exceptionally bright in his early years, renowned for his literary talent.” In his young adulthood, he served as the head of Jinhua Academy in Zhejiang, advocating for practical education. In the 12th year of the Guangxu reign (1886), he joined the staff of Zhang Yao, the governor of Shandong. In the 16th year, he wrote the book Weiyan (Dangerous Words), consisting of four volumes, in which he proposed streamlining redundant officials, reforming the imperial examination system, promoting schools, developing mineral resources, building railways, improving water conservancy, and strengthening naval defenses, along with elaborating on his reformist ideas.
