Yilan Pavilion

Yilan Pavilion is a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou.

Yilan Pavilion is a scenic landmark in Xiaoshan, built in the tenth year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1531) by Magistrate Hong Zhu.

Offering a close view of Xianghu Lake and a distant glimpse of the Qiantang River, it is famously known as “Stone Cliff Gazing at Autumn,” one of the original Eight Scenic Views of Xianghu Lake. During the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong and Jiaqing eras, this site was a gathering place where literati composed poetry. The poet Tang Jinzhao once left a verse: “Beneath the cliff, monks return as clouds part suddenly; atop the tower, the bell tolls as daylight breaks (first bright). Where to find this secluded Yilan Pavilion? Only remnants remain—fragrant springs soaking mossy stains.” During the War of Resistance against Japan, the Xiaoshan County Committee of the Communist Party of China secretly operated here.

In 1941, after the Japanese invasion of Xiaoshan, the pavilion was destroyed to build a fort, bringing suffering to local residents, and Yilan Pavilion was reduced to ruins. The current Yilan Pavilion was rebuilt in the winter of 1994 (slightly northwest of the original site) with funding donated by Zhejiang Asia-Pacific Electromechanical Group Co., Ltd., thus restoring the pavilion to its historical appearance.
