Former Residence of Zhu Fengbiao

The former residence of Zhu Fengbiao is a cultural relic protection unit of Hangzhou.

The former residence of Zhu Fengbiao is located in Zhujatan Village, Xintang Subdistrict. Locals refer to it as the “Number Two Scholar’s Gate,” reflecting the eminent status of its former occupant. Zhu Fengbiao was the highest-ranking scholar-official in the history of Xiaoshan and a descendant of the Song Dynasty Neo-Confucian master Zhu Xi.

Zhu Fengbiao (October 10, 1800 – August 2, 1873), styled Tongxuan and also known as Jianxia, was a native of Zhujatan Village, east of Xiaoshan County, Zhejiang. In the eighth year of the Daoguang reign (1828) during the Qing Dynasty, he passed the provincial examination. In the twelfth year, he ranked second in the palace examination, earning the title of Jinshi, and was appointed as a Hanlin editor. In the nineteenth year, he entered the Imperial Study and later served as an educational intendant in Hubei. In the twenty-first year, he was appointed as a supervisor at the Imperial College and later promoted to Attendant Reader. In the twenty-fourth year, he was elevated to Reader-in-Waiting. The following year, he was tasked with tutoring the Seventh Imperial Son (later Prince Chun), was promoted to Minister of the Cabinet, and concurrently served as Vice Minister of Rites. Xintang Subdistrict: Xintang Subdistrict is located in the central urban area of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou, approximately 14 kilometers from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport.
