Macaque Gorge

Macaque Gorge is located in Fengyuan Township, Liandu District, 65 kilometers from the county town. It stretches 15 kilometers in length and was formed by a mountain stream originating from the Bamian Lake Mountain Range, which sits at an elevation of 1,389 meters.

The gorge is hundreds of zhang deep, with high peaks, small hills, and valley walls that present a rugged, terraced appearance. The valley walls consist of layered gneiss rock; the widest part of the valley floor spans over 30 meters, while the narrowest section is just two meters wide. Looking up, one sees a line of sky between distant peaks and drifting clouds; towering cliffs rise on both sides, covered in layers of lush green. Nearby, waterfalls and springs flow, while rare flowers and plants abound—an unending spectacle reminiscent of a vast landscape painting suspended between heaven and earth. The area is home to many protected animals, including macaques, black deer, pangolins, and foxes.

Macaque Gorge, situated at the junction of Liandu, Qingtian, and Jingning counties, spans 15 kilometers. The gorge plunges hundreds of zhang deep, with valley walls made of layered gneiss rock. The valley floor is as wide as 30 meters in some spots, but as narrow as just two meters in others. Gazing upward, one sees a sea of peaks, a narrow ribbon of sky, and clouds nestled among the summits. Up close, the steep cliffs, cascading waterfalls, flowing springs, and layers of emerald-green ridges, along with abundant rare flowers and plants, create an overwhelming sight like a giant landscape painting hanging across the heavens and earth.
