Shangshu Memorial Archway

The Shangshu Memorial Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The Shangshu Memorial Archway is located in Fanjia Village, Hejia Township, Changshan County. Built in the 25th year of the Ming Jiajing reign (1546), it was erected in honor of Fan Ying, who served as the Minister of Justice in Nanjing during the late Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty. It is a wooden archway. Its pillars bear inscriptions such as “Fan Yiqing, Jinshi of the TianShun Jiashen year, known for his integrity and simplicity; restructured in the Bing year of the Ming Jiajing reign” and “Fan Ying, 10th place in the Zhejiang division of the Jingtai Bingzi imperial examination, restructured in the 16th year of the Qianlong reign.”

Since 2005, Changshan County has leveraged the exemplary clean governance of Fan Ying to strengthen the protection, restoration, and management of related cultural heritage sites, including the Shangshu Memorial Archway, Shangshu Tomb, Shangshu Hall, Hucheng Ancestral Temple, and the Fan Clan Ancestral Hall. The county has restored and exhibited relics and remains such as Fan Ying’s former residence, ancestral hall, and memorial archway, fully tapping into the legacy of clean governance and establishing an educational base for integrity culture. This has helped promote the reputation of “Hometown of Upright Officials.” Building on this foundation, the county has further developed facilities such as an electronic education screening room and an anti-corruption reading room. It has collected and compiled stories of Fan Ying’s diligence and integrity, publishing them in the book “The Incorruptible Fan Ying,” which is distributed to all county-level deputy section chiefs and above, as well as to the top officials of village Party committees and villagers’ committees, to foster a platform for integrity education. In 2006, the Shangshu Memorial Archway was designated as one of the first county-level cultural relic protection units and named a base for integrity education.
