The Carved Flower Mansion (Chunzai Lou) is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Dongshan Carved Flower Mansion (Chunzai Lou) is located at No. 58 Zijin Road, Dongshan Town, Wuzhong District, Suzhou. Commonly called the Carved Flower Mansion, its formal name is “Chunzai Lou,” meaning “Spring Dwells Here,” named for its west-facing structure with the main gate opening eastward, reflecting the saying “Where the sun shines, spring dwells forever.” The estate spans over 5,500 square meters and consists of structures such as a screen wall, gate tower, front building, rear building, and auxiliary rooms, all symmetrically arranged along a central axis. The front and rear buildings are connected by wing rooms and corridors, forming a covered corridor style. The main building has three floors; the designers carefully considered lighting and ventilation for the courtyard and upper levels, so the third floor is slightly retracted with just two roof beams, creating a “faux three-story” effect that appears particularly scientific.

The main building includes both Chinese and Western-style reception halls. The Chinese hall features traditional design with crane-neck rafter curved roof beams, a standing screen, redwood side tables, and armchairs. The Western hall has a plastered ceiling with cascading moldings, adorned with stained glass panels in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. Its doors and windows follow Western styles, and the room is furnished with sofas and tea tables. This setup allowed the owner to receive guests of different backgrounds, habits, and preferences in appropriately styled atmospheres. Such an arrangement not only reflects the owner’s distinguished status but also mirrors the socio-cultural characteristics of a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. To the north of the mansion, a small yet exquisite garden was created in the leftover space from construction. It includes pavilions, bridges, rockeries, ponds, flowers, and trees—offering scenery for all seasons. Even the smallest stone and the tiniest pond were meticulously designed.

In the northwest corner of the garden stands a Buddhist pavilion, specially built by the owner for his mother. It provides a serene atmosphere for prayer and scripture reading, offering a sense of tranquility and separation from worldly affairs. The brick-carved gate tower and front hall are the areas where the owner paid the most attention—they are also the most exquisite parts of the entire residence. The gate tower boasts exquisitely detailed brick carvings, and the beams, pillars, brackets, and partition doors/windows of the main building are all decorated with carvings, fully showcasing the refined artistry of Suzhou-style architecture and the craftsmanship of the Xiangshan builders. Each carving depicts a vivid story, centered around themes of “loyalty, filial piety, chastity, and righteousness” as well as “passing down filial piety and family values,” while also reflecting the owner’s aspirations for “prosperity, wealth, longevity, and happiness” and the desire for “long life and wellness.”

As an old Chinese saying goes: “The Classic of Filial Piety can govern the world.” The Carved Flower Mansion can be regarded as a museum of traditional Chinese culture. Here, one can not only witness the splendid achievements of Chinese civilization but also marvel at the breathtaking and exquisitely crafted carvings and decorations that leave visitors in awe.
