Lugang Ancient Village

Lugang Ancient Village is a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City.

Located by Taihu Lake on the back hills of Suzhou, Lugang is currently the ancient village with the highest quality, largest quantity, and best-preserved architecture in the Jiangnan region.

Lugang Ancient Village is the hometown of Wang Ao, the prime minister during the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty. Wang Ao successively achieved the top rankings in the imperial examinations — Jieyuan, Huiyuan, and Tanhua. His disciple Tang Bohu praised him as “the foremost in literary talent under heaven, and the peerless prime minister in the mountains.” The village was named after Wang Ao’s mother, whose surname was Lu. Nestled within a mountain valley, the village sits against Moli Peak and faces Taihu Lake, with Cold Valley Mountain to the east and Arrow Vase Hill — now known as Gongli Island — to the west, standing in the distance across from West Mountain of Taihu. Surrounded by mountains and water, the scenery is picturesque. The village preserves over 30 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, covering an area of tens of thousands of square meters. The villagers live along the mountainside, and six lanes run straight through the village down to the lakeshore. Walking through the long lanes and quiet passageways feels like stepping into a corridor of history. Following the former residence of Wang Ao toward the back hills leads to vast orange groves — the filming location of the movie "The Oranges Are Red."

The architecture of the ancient village adapts to the terrain, undulating along the natural slopes, interweaving in a complex layout that holds great historical and artistic value. The residential houses feature simple exteriors but exquisitely crafted forms, with elegant and pristine tones in their halls, intricate brick carvings on gate towers, and beautifully painted beams, windows, and brackets — all showcasing delicate craftsmanship and the distinctive architectural style of the Ming and Qing periods. The floor plan of Lugang residences typically follows a central longitudinal axis, sequentially arranging features from the outside in: screen walls, entrance halls, sedan-chair halls, main halls, upper-floor halls, and boundary walls.

The houses along the main axis are referred to by locals as the “main block.” On either side of the main block lies another longitudinal axis: the right side is for studies and miscellaneous rooms, while the left is for women’s quarters and kitchens. These lateral structures are called the “side blocks” by locals. The main block and side blocks are connected by service lanes. Such large residences usually have four courtyards in sequence, each separated by a skywell. The gate behind the main hall marks the boundary between the inner and outer sections of the residence. The main hall is the primary structure of the residence, and the upper-floor hall is the tallest building, forming the core of the inner living area. Together, they exemplify the classic Suzhou-style architecture.

Currently preserved are seven representative cultural heritage sites: the Lu Clan Ancestral Hall, Hengnan Lu Public Hall, Huixuan Study, Lu Sujiu Residence, Stone-paved Path, Baisha Wharf, and ancient wells. The Lu Clan Ancestral Hall is located at the village entrance, facing southeast with its back to the northwest, measuring 23.4 meters in width and 26.6 meters in depth. It is the most well-preserved and largest ancestral hall discovered so far in the city’s cultural relics survey efforts. The Hengnan Lu Public Hall is situated to the rear right of the Lu Clan Ancestral Hall, built in 1894 (Guangxu 20th year, mid-autumn), ten years later than the Lu Clan Ancestral Hall. It faces east, measures 11.4 meters in width, and 23.5 meters in depth.

The ancient village is located in a mountain valley, backed by Moli Peak and facing Taihu Lake, with Cold Valley Mountain to the east and Arrow Vase Hill — now known as Gongli Island — to the west, standing in the distance across from West Mountain of Taihu. Surrounded by mountains and water, the scenery is picturesque. The villagers live along the mountainside, and six lanes run straight through the village down to the lakeshore. Walking through the long lanes and quiet passageways feels like stepping into a corridor of history.
