Suyuan Park

Suyuan Park is located in the residential area of Suyuan New Village on Renmin South Road, Suzhou, covering an area of nearly 15 acres. It is a recreational park built in 1990 by the Wuzhong District Government. The design of the park’s entrance is ingenious, integrating management functions, retail services, and a grape trellis. Its form is simple and unadorned, with a rigorous composition and rich spatial variations. It serves both as an overture to entering the park and as a transition between the residential area and the park space. Upon entering, you’ll find a small courtyard of over a hundred square meters, which leads separately to the recreational area and the children’s playground.

Walking eastward through a moon gate in the pink wall, you’ll be greeted by a stretch of water. At the northern end of the pool, a winding corridor connects to the Pinxiangju (Fragrance Appreciation House). Pinxiangju faces south with gently upturned eaves, floor-to-ceiling crabapple-patterned windows, and a north-facing pink wall that separates the courtyard. A moon gate opens directly into the children’s playground. Pinxiangju is a casual restaurant serving local snacks, with simple and unpretentious interior decor. Looking across the water from Pinxiangju to the south, you’ll see the Hehuan Hall teahouse situated on the islet. The northern corridor of Hehuan Hall extends over the water, while the western section features a flying rainbow bridge that connects with the park’s riverside corridor to the west. To the southwest, the Yige Pavilion spans the river; a half pavilion juts out over the water, connected by walkways that create ever-changing views as you stroll. Two small bridges in the eastern part of the islet connect to the central area of the park.

On the western bank of the pool between Pinxiangju and Hehuan Hall, a stone slab juts out into the water under the corridor, with a small square pavilion topped with a pyramidal roof built on top. Four moon windows are embedded within the surrounding white walls, set off by the water surface, perfectly capturing the poetic imagery of “a bit of land, a bit of sky, eternal moonlight; five winds, ten rains, spring all year round.” Taking a short rest in the pavilion, each window frames a unique view. Across from the square pavilion, a hill rises with sheer yellow stone walls, as if cleaved by an axe. Atop the cliff sits an exquisitely crafted hexagonal pavilion. The western garden, spanning just over five acres, boasts elegant scenery.

The eastern cedar forest presents a completely different scene. The terrain has gentle undulations, with trees and shrubs grouped naturally into a forest. The vast, lush green lawn and clear flowing stream bring a sense of comfort and joy.
