The Former Residence of Shen Baihan (Shen's Mansion)

The Former Residence of Shen Baihan (Shen's Mansion) is a cultural heritage site protected by Suzhou Municipality.

Shen's Mansion is a well-preserved, luxurious residence in Luzhi Ancient Town and was the home of Mr. Shen Baihan, a member of the Tongmenghui and an educator in Luzhi. Situated within one of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Fuli" — the "Morning Market at Xihui" — the architectural layout reflects a combination of official and commercial purposes, featuring storefronts in the front, private quarters in the back, workshops on the left, and shops on the right. The original building covered an area of more than 3,500 square meters. The currently restored and open section is the western part, spanning approximately 1,000 square meters. The Shen family was originally wealthy, owning properties all around. Since the late Qing and early Republican period, the saying "Shen owns half the town" has been widely circulated.

Shen Baihan was a native of Luzhi. His grandfather, Shen Kuanfu, was the one who rebuilt Fuli Academy during the Guangxu era. Shen Baihan lost his father at the age of seven and was raised by his mother. As the eldest son of the Shen family, he was particularly doted on by his grandfather and received guidance from eminent tutors from a young age, laying a solid foundation in traditional learning. At the age of 21, he went to Japan and enrolled in the Department of Education at Waseda University. In Japan, he acquired new knowledge, embraced modern ideas, and broadened his horizons. At 23, a serious family dispute arose within the Shen household, forcing Shen Baihan to drop out of school and return home. Back in his hometown, he deeply felt the closed-mindedness of the ancient town and believed it was essential to enlighten the public. Thus, he adopted the philosophy of saving the nation through education. He transformed Fuli Academy into Fuli Primary School and devoted himself to the field of education.

Shen's Mansion consists of a dry wall gate, a ceremonial hall, a main hall, the Leshan Hall, a study, and a multi-story reception hall. The architecture is elegant, the decorations refined, and the carvings intricate, making it a typical example of traditional Suzhou-style ancient buildings. TV dramas such as *Dream of the Red Chamber*, *Fortress Besieged*, and *Love Showered Upon the World*, as well as the film *Rose Whirlpool*, were filmed here.

Among them, the Leshan Hall houses two pairs of couplets on pillars. The first reads: “Prosperity in business and career begins with perseverance; the joy of reading comes from the teachings of virtue.” The second reads: “Harmony brings auspicious light, refined speech and noble conduct, reverence for virtue and love of righteousness, all under the grace of benevolence.” The first couplet offers teachings for descendants, while the second is related to the name of the hall, expressing the lofty ideal to be achieved through “joy in doing good.”

The eastern one-story building with an upper floor was originally used as a study; the ground floor now serves as a kitchen, preserving the dining setup of a wealthy family in those times. There are also two ancient wells within the mansion — one in the courtyard in front of the Leshan Hall, featuring a Wukang stone well curb, said to date back to the Song Dynasty, and another at the eastern corner of the steps in front of the multi-story reception hall, said to be from the Ming Dynasty. How could there be wells from the Song and Ming Dynasties in a house over a hundred years old? It is because when wealthy families purchased properties and rebuilt homes, they often kept the old wells in place to preserve feng shui and for the auspicious saying of “continuous wealth flow.” To the north of the rear courtyard is a seven-room multi-story reception hall with side rooms, featuring staircases on both the east and west sides, which were spaces for women’s activities at that time. The ground floor now houses a small shop selling tourist handicrafts with a water town theme.

Shen Baihan (1884–1953), also named Changwei and styled Bo’an, was a native of Luzhi, Wu County. He was a member of the Tongmenghui and an educator. His grandfather, Shen Kuanfu, who rebuilt Fuli Academy during the Guangxu era, was his grandfather. He lost his father at the age of seven and was raised by his mother. The Shen family was a prominent rising wealthy family in town and had a family school at Fuli Academy, inviting the renowned scholar Fang Huan (also known as Fang Weiyi) from Kunshan to teach the clan’s children. Shen Baihan received instruction from famous teachers from a young age, establishing a strong foundation in classical learning.

In 1904, at the age of 21, Shen Baihan went to Japan and enrolled in the Department of Education at Waseda University. 1906... More detailed information about Shen Baihan ++
