Mudu Yan's Garden

Yan's Garden is located by Wangjiaqiao on Shantang Street in Mudu Town, facing Xiangxi Stream and backed by Lingyan Mountain. "Though situated in the mountains and forests, the exquisite structure of this garden rivals those in the city" (Tong ??, *Records of Gardens in the South of the Yangtze*), making it one of the renowned gardens of the Jiangnan region. The predecessor of Yan's Garden was the residence of Shen Deqian, a prominent scholar of the Qing Dynasty during the Qianlong reign and the compiler of *Origins of Ancient Poetry*. In the eighth year of the Daoguang reign (1828 AD), Shen’s descendants handed over the property to Qian Duanyan, a poet from Mudu. Qian created rockeries, excavated ponds, and built pavilions and towers, including the Youyu Study, Tiaonong Tower, and Yian Pavilion, attracting numerous poetic tributes at the time. Gong Zizhen praised the garden with phrases such as "exquisite construction perfectly natural, not man-made," and "leaning rocks like beauties."

In the 28th year of the Guangxu reign (1902 AD), Yan Guoxin, the wealthiest man in Mudu (and grandfather of Taiwan politician Yan Jiagan), purchased Duanyuan, renovated it extensively, and renamed it "Xianyuan." Because the owner had the surname Yan, locals called it "Yan’s Garden." Over 170 years and through three generations of owners, Yan’s Garden has been enriched by both the passage of time and deep cultural heritage, endowing it with a refined cultural atmosphere and the elegance of a famous garden. In 1935, Professor Liu Dunzhen, a modern architect, visited the garden twice, captivated by its layout and meticulous details. He regarded Yan’s Garden as the "finest example" among Suzhou’s local gardens.

Yan’s Garden covers an area of 16 mu. The central axis features five main structures in sequence: the Entrance Hall, Yibin Hall, Shangxian Hall, Mingshi Tower, and Tiaonong Tower. Among these, the third structure, Shangxian Hall, is a rare Ming-style nanmu wood hall in Suzhou, with a history of over 400 years. It has stone bases and elegant, classic design; straight nanmu pillars that are smooth and gentle; simple and uncluttered carvings; and a light, understated color palette, combining practicality with aesthetic value. In front of Shangxian Hall and Mingshi Tower stand brick-carved gateways from the Qing Dynasty, featuring exquisitely detailed carvings of figures and theatrical scenes, full of charm and meaning. Though attached to the halls, they can also be appreciated as standalone artworks of high artistic and aesthetic value.
