Yangcheng Lake Ecological Sports Park

Covering an area of 1.1 million square meters with a total investment of 250 million yuan, Yangcheng Lake Ecological Sports Park was established in December 2008 and is now largely completed. It is the largest open sports park in Suzhou themed around fitness and leisure.

The most notable aspect of the park is its rational layout of venues for sports, leisure, and entertainment, incorporating and “reviving” the “Eight Scenic Spots of Weiting.” Fitness and leisure activities are hailed as the most fashionable, healthy, and eco-friendly “sunshine” industry of the 21st century. The 35-kilometer shoreline of Yangcheng Lake in Weiting provides exceptionally high-quality ecological resources for developing sports and leisure activities as well as fitness and wellness programs. The largely completed Yangcheng Lake Ecological Sports Park features 80 varieties of plants and landscape trees, along with 4.5 kilometers of waterway scenery. With 86% green coverage and 11% water surface area, the park forms a multi-layered landscape space that includes water surfaces, slopes, green areas, and woodlands. It integrates multiple functions such as ecological wetlands, flood control, and environmental protection. The project has also been included as a key initiative and demonstration project within Suzhou’s protective forest belt and the ecological corridor along Yangcheng Lake.

In addition, the historic town of Weiting will also see its most famous “Eight Scenic Spots of Weiting” “revived” through this park. According to the *Yuanshi Weiting Annals*, the Eight Scenic Spots include: “Moon over the Stone Bridge,” “Ancient Temple with Tall Trees,” “Listening to the Tide at Yuangjing,” “Lotus Breeze in the Fishing Pool,” “Golden Sand at Sunset,” “Winding Streams Around the Mountains,” “Yangcheng Fishing Boats,” and “Autumn Views from the Hills.” These eight spots offer an authentic depiction of the beautiful scenery along Yangcheng Lake. The newly built Yangcheng Lake Ecological Sports Park strives to recreate these Eight Scenic Spots. According to project developers, 60% of the park has been completed, and work will continue on the “Eight Scenic Spots,” along with the development of supporting sports and fitness facilities.
