Located in the ancient city of Suzhou, Soochow University is a key institution under China's "211 Project." Its main predecessor was Soochow University, founded in 1900 during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty. As one of the earliest modern higher education institutions in China, Soochow University has set several firsts in the history of modern Chinese higher education: the first university to adopt a Western-style academic system, the first to offer graduate education and confer master's degrees, the first to establish a law program, the first to launch a university journal, and more.

The Main Campus of Soochow University is the most historically rich among its campuses. The most captivating feature is the abundance of classic old buildings scattered throughout the campus, with the most famous being the Red Building and the Clock Tower—home to the School of Mathematical Sciences and the university president’s office. Students often enjoy the large lawn and Lover’s Slope, where simply lying down and watching the sunset is a delightful experience. In spring, the campus bursts into bloom with flowers, while autumn brings stunning golden ginkgo leaves. There is also the Soochow University Museum on campus, which is worth a visit.
