Mudu Hongyin Mountain Villa

Mudu Hongyin Mountain Villa is a private garden built during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong era by Xu Shiyuan, a literati from Mudu. It is located by the Xiangxi River on Shantang Street in Mudu, and got its name because of its proximity to Hongqiao Bridge. It has been described as excelling in “the beauty of streams, mountains, moonlight, and the splendor of ponds, pavilions, flowers, and trees,” surpassing other classical gardens in the Jiangnan region. Its architecture is grand, and the style combines the refined beauty of Jiangnan literati gardens with the majestic magnificence of northern imperial gardens. Emperor Qianlong visited the area six times during his southern tours and would always disembark from his boat to tour the garden and watch performances. His court officials, including Liu Yong, even stayed here twice, leaving behind many legendary and touching stories. As a result, Hongyin Mountain Villa is also known as the “Qianlong’s Traveling Palace.”
